I was wonder how much horsepower and torque the stock flexplate will take on an automatic transmission truck? Also, what are the options for an aftermarket flexplate? Thanks!!
 
The flexplate is one of those thing that you never know when it will go on you. I have seen many stock trucks rip them up and I have seen modified trucks run the stock one and it hold. The problem with this situation is that their is no guarantee as to what will happen with your particular flexplate. If it does break your converter will go with it. If this is something that you are worried I would suggest a beeter one, you might consider it insurance. Our billet plate is SFI approved and doesn't break.
 
My stock flexplate bent with just an EZ and a HRVP44. No drag racing or sled pulling just an occasional street rip. I know have a Suncoast Flexplate in front of my Goerend Brothers Transmission. I would suggest changing the plate when you upgrade the transmission
 
I have seen one brake with about 600hp. But you can get one from BD for about $460, you can also get one from ATS i think

I bet a lot of the broken ones are on trucks with 3 disc clutches in the converter, their running locked-up at low RPM. And with more than stock timing/power.

Just FYI, i have see 3 trucks this year break a flex plate. Truck #1 was turned up and running an aftermarket T/C. Truck #2 was a stock 12valve. Truck #3 was a bone stock 1ST GEN! Saying the 3 disc converter breaks flexplates, is a very large blanket statement. A 3 disc converter will put more stress on the flexplate because there is not going to be any slip. I think if anything the "billet" converters help support the flexplate. Most of them make contact with more surface area than the stocker, which in my mind, if failure were to occur would keep the big shrapnel down to the smallest radius of the failed flexplate. :)
 
I have talked to ATS because i have the stock flex plate and i am just under 600hp. They told me to run until it breaks but its up to me. They also said that it you have their triple disk converter, when the flex plate breaks it will not damange the converter but i will damange a stock converter.
 
With the triple-lok it is much less likely to do damage but it is still possible. being machined from billet steel it is much stronger than the factory one could ever dream of being.
