I was listening to a trucker's show on the radio and they were talking about cool accessories, and asking people to call in to talk about their favorite one. A professional driver called in and said his favorite was a FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared) system with a heads-up display that illuminates his windshield. I've seen the Pathfinder at the FLIR site, but couldn't find one for vehicles that had the HUD. Has anyone here used one, and if so what did you think? The driver who called the show said he loved his, and could follow the heat signatures of tires in blizzards, foggy weather and all other weather. Sounds like a cool accessory, especially if you can tune the HUD image to fill the windshield with a low level illumination.

Huh I chuckle at the idea as I just finished an install on another bird tonight . . MH-60R And all I can imagine is a fanny load of co processors and support systems associated with a traditional forward looking infared radar system scaled down to civilian size. But the tech is here Night Vision For Any Car: FLIR PathfindIR

That would be sweet tho. The training for heat signatures would be very daunting as the system needs to have much of the manual input done automatticly to reduce driver distraction. BMW's system is cool but no HUD ( YouTube - BMW Night Vision ) But if Microvision gets involved OOOhhhhhhhh Oo. It would be something like this tho Night Vision System for Cars

That's one cool looking chopper. My plan was to get the FLIR first, and worry about the weaponry later. But after seeing that, I might just change my priorities a bit.

The driver that called the show didn't name his system or say how complicated it was to install. After doing some research I figured it was the Pathfindir, but I couldn't find any info for an HUD for that model. I'm also just guessing he had a full windshield HUD. I also got the idea that the flat windshield on a semi might be more suitable for an HUD than our curved windshields. I don't like the idea of driving and having to keep looking down at a small display. I also thought it would have been a good accessory for the Ice Road Truckers, especially when they were driving in the white-out conditions.

Thanks for the info. If you hear anything more about FLIR units for our trucks let me know. I'm definitely interested. It would be great when driving on country roads where the tree line comes right up to the road and the deer seem to wait for you to drive by before darting into the road.
