Floor Jack

Need a new one after 25 yrs. Don't need a lightweight fast pump. Will be stored inside, and not carried in the truck, most of the time. Suggestions?

I have been using a 3 ton steel floor jack as well as a 1. 5 ton aluminum floor jack from Harbor Freight for over 6 years... still going strong. That being said, if I had the spare change, I would buy one of these, picking between made in USA or Hecho in China, also depending what I can afford.

I have a good 3 ton from Napa, it has a two speed pump for fast lifting empty. I give $200 on sale, $300 normal. It is not a commercial duty but great for personal use.

can you rebuild the 25yo jack? Probably better made than anything under 500 bucks you can get today...

I bought a 3-ton floor jack at Tractor Supply about a year ago after my 30-yr old reliable 3-ton floor jack finally gave up. It's OK for a Chinese made jack, but after using it, I think the lifting capacity is overrated. It's definately a typical Chinese cheaply made "throw away" once it fails. I don't dare use it without jack stands!

Not sure if it is rebuildable, but it is not enough to get the axle off the ground safely, not very stable. Designed for cars, and worked just fine for that task. I will check out NAPA on Monday, thanks.

I bought a 3 ton Michelin with jack stands at costco for 200. 00 . Has 2 speeds ,and is made in china,works great.

I bought a Craftsman floor jack from Sears with two 6 ton floor stands a couple of years ago as a Christmas package. Still working able to lift the truck easily and holding up will.
I will not get under any vehicle without jack stands under it I never trust any jack regardless who makes it.

bought the same package, but mine also came with a creeper... . Seems ok for use in my shop although I do not use it much... im sure its made in China with a Mexican made sticker. .
NEVER get under ANYTHING without proper blocking/cribbing and stands etc...

I don't get under anything, zero turn or riding mower, 3-point hitch rotary mower, car, truck, etc. without jack stands and or stable blocking. i won't walk under the loader on my tractor when it's raised either. I had a car fall on me when I was about 10 years old and my late father lifted it off of me. I was lucky I didn't get hurt, just scared, and don't trust my luck any further. It was one of life's lessons I'll never forget.

While it seems that the quality of hydraulic floor jacks that are Hecho in China are reasonable, I personally would NEVER use a set of cam type jack stands that are Hecho in China.

I have 3 sets of varying capacities that I have bought over the years, and each set has something wrong with it, from legs that don't sit flat on the floor, to handles on the cams that have come loose, so it is impossible to know if the cam is locked in place. Here is quote from another forum--



"I stopped using the HF stands after I lowered one corner of a 3/4 ton truck onto them and I watched the pad spread a good 1/4" and the actual metal frame of the stand spread all over the place. "



Furthermore, I have seen the quality of castings of "heavy" but CHEAP steel parts made in China, and there is just too much chance of bad quality to risk injury with cheap jack stands. I just don't use any of them anymore. Instead, I either use wooden cribbing OR a pair of "pin-type" stands that I got discounted from Snap-On because no-one else wanted them on the guys truck.

Yes they are made in China, but given their rating and working mechanism, I can't find any failure points on them. They are like these, but Snap-On brand and cost me much less.

Timely thread. My 4-ton Crapsman just quit after 9 years of extremely light use (average maybe 10 uses per year). Internal failure in the hydraulic unit somewhere - won't pressurize.

I've been looking at my options. The way I see it, you either blow $100 on an el-cheapo Chinese one labeled "Craftsman" and plan to do so at regular intervals, or you take a shot at a US-made one from somewhere like Hein-Werner. Problem is, I don't think the US-made ones are any more serviceable than the Chinese models when they break, and I'm not convinced they are "made" in America rather than just "assembled" in America.

I could buy 5 Chinese replacements for my jack for the cost of just 1 US-made floor jack. If each one lasted only 5 years, that's 25 years of jacking, which isn't bad. Ultimately, it's the shame I feel using Chinese junk that keeps me from simply making this logical choice.

I've tentatively decided to recycle the frame on my Sears by converting it to a screw-type mechanical jack.

I now keep my lighter 3 ton floor jack in my service truck and use a harbor freight 4 ton floor jack around the shop full time. It does a much better job with the 1 ton or higher trucks and doesn't tend to twist or lean as much. It's hard to beat for the price, but of course I don't get under anything without stands or cribbing. When you pick one up, you can really feel the difference. It weighs 30 lbs more than a comparable 3 ton.
