For a 2000 CTD with a 47RH automatic transmission, how many quarts of trans fluid does it take for a flush and refill?

My wife's girlfriend wants to have her truck serviced and is converting to AMSOil for most of the fluids.

She wants to go with the AMSOil 15w/40 Heavy Duty Synthetic Diesel (same stuff I use) ... or would the Series 3000 5w/30 Synthetic be better for these 24 valve engins (a lot more $$$ though)?

That web page lists 6. 5 qts for 47RE. Saw nothing listed for 47RH. Also, this figure is for oil in pan only, excluding torque converter. Total capacity is 14 qts on the 47RE, which should be the same.

If it were me, using Amsoil in your part of the country, I would use a 30 wt oil (0w-30 or 5w-30); unless towing heavy and often.

I use a high quality 30 wt year round with lots of hauling but no towing.

The 15w-40 you mention is excellent oil and will work well also; just harder starting in winter and , IMHO, overkill protectionwise.

Lighter oil always gives easier starts, better flow, cooler cylinder head temps and often better mileage. Should be, however, a high quality and a synthetic (like your Amsoil) if using in a diesel.

RowJ,

She doesn't really tow anything, but she does plow her 1200' driveway which is the only real stress on the truck that she gives it.

So the Series 3000 5w/30 AMSOil would be your recommendation then? I run that stuff in my 2003 Jetta TDI and seems to work just great, but then again it never towes or carries anything.

Also, she wants to keep the 7500 mile oil change interval, so I figure the Series 3000 5w/30 diesel oil or the 15w/40 would be just fine for that (I do every 5000 mile for my truck and car).

I have used a lot of different oils and I like amsoil 5w30 by far. I change the oil every 21,000 miles and the filter every 7000 miles. Best oil I've ever used.

I am actually working on starting a business selling aftermarket parts for diesels and one of the items I wanted to carry was AMSOIL. All the information they showed me indicated that it is a very good oil. I switched over and am very satisfied. I seemed to have picked up about 2mpg after changing everything else. JSHAW is right, you change the filter every 7500 miles and get you oil tested at regular intervals. I plan to test mine every oil filter change. The 5W-30 would work good for the truck.

I agree with Kyke & Jim. Your (her) plan for 7500 mile oil and filter change, using 5w-30 is excellent preventative maintenance plan.

If she wants to get into oil analysis program-may be able to extend schedule to 10,000 miles or more.

If she doesn't drive at least 15,000 mi a yr. I am a big fan of changing oil every 6 months (late spring and late fall) no matter what oil analysis says. I know these are fighting words to fans of long term changes through oil analysis, but IMHO, it's cheap insurance against gum & carbon formations which can start to show problems at 200,000 + miles in a CTD. When you have an engine that can go 500,000+ miles, why not spend a few more pennies every so often to keep it really clean on the inside.

Sorry; Just re-read this- sounds like a sermon. Here endith the lesson!

Good luck Cat! I'm wish I knew a woman who was into CTD's!!
