Fluid from transfer case tailshaft -- need info

I have a 2004 3500 drw w/ 4 wheel drive. I noticed a smell like oil or hot fluid coming from under the truck when I stopped for fuel.

When checking under the truck for the source for the smell I noticed where fluid had come out of the rear tailshaft area. Went to fill the transfer case till I could replace the seal. As I put in gear oil almost immediately red trans fluid came out.

So, any insights? Is there another seal that is also bad, like between the trans and transfer case? Is this a big worry? Anybody else had this condition?

The transfer case takes automatic transmission fluid,not gear oil.

If it is leaking at the tail shaft then the seal is worn out. Not that uncommon. Mine went bad after the driveshaft joint locked up. I actually had to replace the tailcone and seal before I got my leak fixed. It's a pretty easy fix. Pull the driveshaft. Pull the seal with a hammer and screwdriver. Careful not to damage the seal surface. Put a little rtv on the seal and tap the new on in. Install driveshaft and you are done.

Hi,

I just did one of these and you can get the part cheap at dodgeparts.com. Just click on the "oem catalog" button and search. It's an actual chrysler part and it fit perfect. They ship fast too! I was told to mark my driveshaft to keep the balance in check. Not sure if this is true but I did it and had no vibrations.
