ok, i would like to change my getrag fluid, and i have two questions. 1 would synthetic oil be ok to refill it with? the manual says to use 5w30. is that correct and will the synthetic be ok to use? 2, i know i have seen it somewhere on here how to fill up the trans and to add 1 qt. i thought i knew how to do it, and messed around looking for a place to fill it up today, but was unsuccessful. so, if anyone can help me locate the info or just plain out tell me, i would be most greatful. thanks. also, what is the best fluid for the transfer case? rearends? im gonna give her all new blood for the winter. thanks again.

I am using the 5-30 as per the manual. The manual also states that automatic transmission fluid can also be used. Personally I don't see any reason why synthetic would not work. To add an extra quart of oil, you can take off the shifter or remove the bolt on the powertake off. I removed the shifter, but it was a bit of a pain to reinstall it. There is a fairly strong spring under the shifter, but after a lot of grunting and talking to myself the job was completed. If you can borrow an extra set of hands it will be a lot easier.

Remember the cardinal rule of synthetics- Synthetics will turn a small leak into a big leak; a big leak into a seive. I remove the shift tower, though it IS a HUGE pain. Makes it easier to refill though. I alwys say I'm going to take off the left PTO cover and drill a hole and weld a bushing on there that I can put a plug into and fill that way. T-case gets regular gear oil, I believe. 75-90 or something in that neighborhood should do. Rear end gets regular gear oil (GL-5). If you go to synthetic, and it's been a while since a change, you can almost bet on replacing wheel seals. I've done it on 3 of the 6 I've had.

Transmission gets 5 qts if you overfill it per TDR recommendations.

Rear diff gets 3. 5 qts. DOnt forget the Limited Slip additive, if applicable, even if you use a synthetic oil.

T-case gets in the neighborhood of 2-3 qts.

Front diff gets 3 qts.

extra fluid

:) Hey bud, I just took some steel nipples and a 90 degree ell and a cap to raise the level. Just run the tires on one side up on blocks and use one of those little quart pumps and add the extra quart. Note: Don't use brass!! Easy,Easy!! Tim

I used Royal Purple in my first Cummins (89 350 single rear with Getrag). It did not leak and had RP in it for 100,000 miles from 70,000 till I sold it. To my knowledge this truck is still using RP and has 350,000 + .

I would suggest the Royal Purple Synchromax for the Getrag.

It has the load carrying ability of a gear oil but the fluid viscosity of an atf.

I used the recommended oil weight, in mobil 1 flavor.

Overfill by one quart for sure. You can do so by removing the shifter (pain in the rear) or through the top PTO bolt.

Hope that helps.
