I am a new member to the sight, and so far i think it is a great sight.

I have a 01' 2500 4x4 6sp. I was wandering if you fellow dodge lovers could give me some tips on which fluids i should use in my engine, transmission, transfer, and rear ends. I currently use rottella t in my engine. I hear alot about the Amsoil. Also i hear alot about the extra filtration on the transfer, can i get extra filtration for the engine?

By the way my 6sp grinds in reverse, transmission has 66k miles on it, and it just started doing it?

Later,

John

Amsoil!

I use Amsoil everywhere. Yes you can get better filtration for the engine. It is called a bypass filter. I use one and love it. There have been mixed opinions on whether to use a remote dual bypass filter versus a single bypass filter. It is up to the user. Godd luck. :)

yourdodgeman, first of all welcome to the TDR website!!!

Leave the rotella in the crankcase, you aren't gonna do any better. Put mobil 1 synthetics in the differentials, and in the transfer case. I would try 5W30 synthetic motor oil in the 6 speed to see if it's manners improve, if not I think the dealer is the only place to get the lube you need locally. MHO, hope this helps.

I notice that in all the discussions of 6-speed gear lube, nobody has mentioned the Pennzoil Synchromesh Fluid. Is there a reason for that?

Jim

It's all from the same place...

Jim -

I was not aware that Penzoil marketed any.

If it meets the spec for MTX/1874 Synchromesh, it is all from the same place. One of the lube doods that frequented this board said that their has not been any other fluids tested for this spec. since the inception of the product.

In the wake of the Chevron/Texaco merger Equiva is the marketer for Texaco lubes. If you buy it from Texaco it is only available in a 5 gal bucket, but said bucket is less than 5quarts from the mopar parts counter.

Not sure this will help ya though.

I would highly recommend Amsoil 5W-30 HDD in the 6-speed. Mine shifted much better right after the change. This transmission is tough on lubricant, so whatever you decide to use, consider changing it yearly.

Engine oil choices have been the cause of some heated debates on this site. At the risk of starting another one, I'll offer some opinions that are based on my own experience.

Conventional petroleum engine oils will offer proper engine protection under most conditions. The areas that their protective qualities are lacking are cold weather starts(does not flow as well as a synthetic when cold), and more potential to coke up turbocharger bearings due to impurities in the oil.

Synthetic oils flow much better when cold, so much less time to full oil pressure on starting is the norm. This equates to less engine wear.

I am convinced after talking to people at May Madness that Lubrication Engineers makes the best gear lube.

Hope some of this helps.

Use the Rotella T in the engine and change it by the book, based on your driving conditions. That should get you over 500K miles :D
