I'm getting things in order to install a new clutch in my truck. In the past on gasser engines, i've always had the flywheel machined to have a good smooth clutch. The clutch is OE with a pile of miles (323K) on it and I'm sure the flywheel will be worn. Also I have warpage on the disc, flywheel, or plate or all three.

My FSM states you can not machine the flywheel. Flywheel is to be ground with grinding machine instead and not more then . 003" removed. States this in general and doesn't state if they mean diesel or gas engines or both. Are you guys machining your flywheels or just replacing them?

If my flywheel can't be machined or can't be machined, where is a good source for a good well made flywheel. Dealer wants big bucks for a new one.

Thanks!

Nice thing about ordering a new 13" clutch from South Bend Clutch, is you get a NEW flywheel along with the clutch kit. www.southbendclutch.com. Plus it's already comes equipped with a HD roller bearing. In the past you received a resurfaced flywheel from them, no more, now you get a new one.

You did get a new 13" clutch not a 12" 'upgrade' clutch??? Either way, many have had their flywheels resurfaced and have had no problems. How much they take off will depend on how bad it's worn. I just had the stock flywheel out of my 89 resurfaced and he took less than 10 thousands off.

Thanks for the info Bg.

I bought a 13" Sachs replacement clutch set, same as OE used. Not worried about an upgraded pilot bearing, have 323K on OE pilot bearing with no probs. Don't abuse the truck enough to use fancy clutch and upgraded pilot bearing. OE Sachs done a great job for 323K other then some warpage somewhere, the main reason I'm replacing it. Doesn't slip or anything yet. Just tired of the chatter and shaking when you need to slip the clutch a bit.
