flywheel up grade questions (size)

ok

it seems i have ran out of input on my getrag post

https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?t=142433

so i will try this one and see what i can get with this one... ...

i dont know if it will be a nv4500 or getrag but untill than

should i up grade flywheel if so what should it get/do

do i want to have a roller polit bearing installed if so

does anyone have part number and instructions or

should i just keep the bushing ? should i go to

a larger size flywheel and bearing ?

for now the truck is mostly stock but i do

tow from time to time.

thanks for any help

Not Sure what you'd upgrade the flywheel to? I've never head of any problems with it. The pilot bushing is junk, upgrade that to a roller bearing, that can be had from Quad4X4.com. The bushing/bearing installs into the flywheel; so if upgrading to the bearing, you'll need to have the flywheel machined. Ether way I'd at least have the flywheel surfaced & install a new clutch kit.

so i guess my question

would be i had thought i read something

about a 13 inch clutch and i am guessing

it will require another flywheel?

and as far as the bearing i dont mind

buying from quad4x4 but we have a lot

of bearing houses in seattle and it would

be nice to go to them so i can see touch

feel what i am getting.

and as far as the machine work required?

i am thinking the flywheel is cut to the size

of the bearing slightly tighter and press the

bearing in?

or does it require a snap ring on each side of the

flywheel?

thanks for the input so far

My stock clutch had 240,000 miles on it until I overpowered it. The pilot bushing was still in great shape it could of been reused. The new clutch came with a rollor baring but the O. D. was too big. I ordered a bushing for my specific truck and it was the same size as the baring. Took the stock bushing down to the parts store and had them match it up. I don't know why my flywheel had a differnt size pilot but it did so maybe some other trucks have this too. Somthing to watch out for. I am pretty sure the only mod required for a 13 inch clutch is to drill new holes for the pressure plate. I think most clutch companys have some sort of exchange but I have seen posts on how to do it yourself. hope this helps a little.

The bore is machined for a hand press fit and a step is left at the rear of the bore. This prevents the bearing from being pushed to far forward. The splines on the input shaft prevent the bearing from traveling rearward.

RBergman, your 93' already has a 13" clutch. No need to upgrade flywheel. Just get a good clutch and drive off :)

The 1st Gen trucks all used 13" clutches w/the 5-spd Getrag, the 12. 4" come out in 1994 w/the NV4500 5-spd. If you go to the local parts store or even to Dodge, they will try to sell you the 12. 4" as the replacement. The original 13" is no longer available from Dodge or most parts houses. However I am sure someone has them, maybe South Bend. I can't remember the brand name, but I think it is foreign along with the transmission, maybe German.

The truck I have been building up for a local member told me he had the truck upgraded to a 13 inch clutch and flywheel assy. The OEM unit was smaller. He had the work performed by a high performance diesel shop. They changed out the clutch and flywheel for him. It's a 93 4X4.

Maybe thet "told" him it had to be upgraded to the 13 inch and that the OEM is smaller cause they work on mostly all second gen rigs. Anyway, he had to pay for a new flywheel regardless if it's "bigger" or not.

Didn't Cade just have to install a 13 inch flywheel cause his 90 was a 12 inch something or other?? Cade..... Cade???????

I'm worrying over nutt'n. I don't really care. Some say 12 and some say 13. I won't loose any sleep over it. Thanks for the reply none the less.

My guess would be that the guys running into the 12. 4" clutch in their 1st Gens. were not original. That they had been changed out with the 12. 4" replacment. The 13" original clutch was not serviced for very long. The 12. 4" will fit the original flywheel as a direct bolt on. However who wants to down grade, someone must carry the 13". Also the original 13" pressure plate was a big ol' cast iron sucker so any replacment is probably made out of stamped steel. Someone out there must know more about this subject.

This explains the stock clutch differences between 1st. /2nd. gen pickups.

Here is some input from South bend clutch:

https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?p=337274&highlight=sachs#post337274

I spoke with Dan @ Quad4X4.com about clutches and from his experience with pickups that are worked & tow, the Sachs is the way to go for that type of work.

I purchased mine from clutchexpress.com, it was the Sachs kit for $439. 00 shipping included.

PS As far as the comments about the Sachs; somewhere or someone said the reason for the change to the Luk, was because Dodge had a lot of comments about the Sachs having a heavy pedal & being grabby. My experience with the new Sachs is a light pedal & smooth engagement.

Everything that I've read states 13" clutch down to the factory service manual. I just check Advance Auto Part's web site and they show 13" with 10 spline and 1. 25" shaft size. I don't recommend advance's parts, but it's nice web site to at least look up info.

ok so far it sounds like stay with the flywheel

i have and add the roller bering pilot so i just

need to figure out the bearing numbers.
