I'm trying to hook up my PIAA fog lights to my stock foglight switch, but don't have my test light with me, and don't have my service manual handy either. My question is, what is the power and ground wire for the stock foglight harness? I have one red and one blue wire and can't choose, lol

Thanks in advance,

James

. . . what is the power and ground wire for the stock foglight harness? I have one red and one blue wire . . .
For model year 2002:
  • Red/Orange - +12 volts (always hot)
  • Light Blue - ground
Be aware that model year 2002 Rams use switched ground in the foglight circuit. The two things that open the path to ground are the foglight relay (opens with high beams) and the foglight portion of the headlight switch.

It probaby does not matter which way you hook them up, as long as there is no ground through the chasis of the light. If there is a ground through the body of the light then use a realy to trigger the lights.

Thanks for the replies fellas. The stock headlights go thru a relay already, but thanks for the advice there JR2. I'll try to hook up the power today and give ya;ll a report.

Thanks again,

James

alright, so like you said, they're always hot, duh. So they're on when I dont want them to be, and off when I do, so, what do i need to switch so that they can run thru the stock relay and switch? If I just run a jumper wire instead of the relay, but which prongs? All I have done is taken the harness from the kit and run the power wires from the light to the power from the original pig tail. The only way to turn them off is either leave the fog light switch on, or take out the fog light fuse, which is what I have done for now. I am not an electric genius, please help

Thanks In Advance

James

You need to add an extra relay to control the lights. Hook the ground from the factory fogs to the ground for the relay, the rest of the relay you hook up to seperate power supply.

Okay, sorry, I guess I didn't understand your previous post. Thanks for clarifying. Do you happen to have a diagram of what you're talking about? So far nothing that I've tried has worked, I guess I just don't understand, and neither does PIAA. They said that the lights are internally grounded thru the housings as well, so I was thinking maybe if I just hooked up the power wire from the fog lights, and grounded the lights to the frame/body?

TIA

James

The power to the fog light is constant. It is switched on through ground. Since your new fog lights are grounded through the housing and meant to be switched on through power they are going to run constant. So like they said you need to run another relay unless you can find some way to make the new lights not ground through the housing.

Ok, so how do I run this other relay? What wire goes where? The lights come with a harness with a relay already in them, so... do I need to rewire the relay harness they send, or just use that relay and make my own harness?

Thanks, James

Sorry it took me so long to reply, just been real hectic around here. Anyways, there is a little wiring diagram that is in instructions included with the lights, so I scanned it in, but don't know how to shrink it down to the appropriate size to attach it to this post. If you could pm me your email i could attach it to an email.

TIA

James

Still trying to get this figured out. I know its been a looooong time, but I've got the PIAA wiring diagram and I think it might load this time. So ive got the main power and main ground hooked to the drivers side battery, and the switch wires, I have cut, up to the switch. So I only have the two smaller black and white wires coming from the relay to hook up to the factory fog harness somehow. From the earlier posts, I thought that I was to hook up the ground from the relay into the ground for the fogs, which I was told was the light blue wire, although the light blue wire is hot when the switch is off, or the high beams are on. and the red wire does not test hot ever:confused:

So, do I need to move around the hook ups in for the relay itself, or which ground to I hook up where? The lights are internally grounded through the housing, is what I was told, so, I'm guessing the the main ground is how they are grounded through the housing since that is the one that runs to the main battery? I've really got nothing guys, and I appologize, I do have my FSM now though.

TIA,

James
