In another thread, OCLV described a way to change out the factory bulbs

(9006 1000 lumins) for 9005's 1700 lumins by modifying the bulb slightly, a great idea but you would have to change out the factory plug for the 9005 plug or buy an adaptor.

The link below goes one step further by doing another simple modification to the bulb which enables you to use the stock plug. :D Check it out.

You can use the factory plug but like you say you have to modify it a little. OCLV sells an adaptor that plugs right in the the factory plug and into the back of the 9005's so there's no modifying except for the top tap that you have to shave a bit off to get it to go in to place.

You don't have to modify the plug, just the bulb, and while you are whittling on the bulb, you may as well remove those two little nibs  in the female part of the bulb and save yourself $25. 00:cool:

eurolite

I have been running the eurolite Xenon Crystal 80 watt 9006hxc 12v bulbs in my fogs for the last 14-15 months with great results. They are very bright and have held up great compared to the stock fog lights. T bought mine at summit racing supplies for $19. 95 per set.

That sounds even easier. Does the extra wattage go thru the fog light switch or a relay? I put higher wattage bulbs in my old ford and the headlight switch went out in about 3 months.

No problems yet after 14-15 months. Not for sure on your question. coobie

The extra wattage needed by some of the aftermarket lamps might become a problem. OTOH the 9005 lamps of stock type take only 55 watts and the factory uses the same gauge wire for low and high beams, meaning there should be no problem with them.

Hey Rammers,

This thread obviously shows there is always more than one way to skin the cat!

Food for thought . . .

The harnesses we make up that have a 9006 receptacle and 9005 plug allow you the ability to easily replace a bulb on the road. Why is that? Well we all know that a quick trim of the 9005 tab allows it to mount where a 9006 would. This trim can be performed with a pair of diagonal cutters, or even a nail clipper in the parking lot of where you bought the replacement bulb. Compare that to needing a dremel tool or other type of grinder that can reach into the socket of the bulb to remove the tabs as in the link provided by the originator of this thread.

Of course, you can pre grind a spare set of 9005 bulbs and keep them in your truck, but who has that kind of foresight? Additionally, due to the nature of truck use, spare bulbs are often ruined before they can be used as shown by the run around vehicles we have at our our location (munched in glove box or crushed / covered with dirt since they are stored under the seat)!
