Hi,

I posted my original thread on Friday. Since then I have been camping. This gave me a chance to look at the engine sticker, and here's what I now know:

Engine: ISB250, output 250hp

Engine Built: 02/19/2003

In the grove box the sticker says:

Transmission code: DG8, 4 sp Auto

Axle Ratio: 3. 73

So I'm still not sure what trany I have. Is it a 47RE or a 48RE?

As a side bar -- I went to www.dodge.com/towing to see what I could tow. I was shocked to see how little I can tow. Now, I'm not sure about the trany, but the lower tow limit is 9900, and upper limit is 10950. I'm not sure of the exact figure because of the trany issue and each page shows 2 listings for 3. 73 axle ratio and 2 listings for 4. 10s. Whats the diff? Is it perhaps single vs. dual rear wheel?

If my tow limit is only 9900 lbs, I may be in trouble. I have an 8600lb UVW trailer -- 9000lb with water. I don't want to be over taxing the truck by always pulling at or near the limits. Any ideas?

Thanks for the help,

Steve

you have the 47RE... My truck was built 10- 02 and is the 235 california version with the 47RE... I pull 15k fver with a jeep inside... no issues... i have 4:10's tho... . but still... you have 15 more ponies and the 3:73 is a good gear for about 10k +-... you should have no issues over that within reason... . I will say tho if you are pulling heavy let it lock up in 3'rd before you want to put in od on the flats... it allows for a more firmer 4th up shift and an easier lockup in 4th

my two cents!!

Pretty sure the DG8 code denotes a 48RE not the 47RE, if you do a search on DG8 in the 3rd gen forums that is what that code is referenced to.

If I remember correctly all the 2003 trucks with the 250hp engines came with the 47RE. It wasn't until later on in 2003 they introduced the 48RH with the 305hp engines.

You can check in your glove box and on the lid itself there should be a sticker with more info.

That is incorrect, the 48RE came with the SO engines after '03 January or Febuary build dates, it has also been repeatably listed in the TDR magizine incorrectly every time they show the year/engine/transmission combos as well.

I only searched on DG8, so I guess it is not definitive, my '03 SO also has a line above DG8, DGA transmission auto, and my window sticker says 48RE, does your's have two lines for the trans in the glove box?

My DG8 jan 03 so cal. build is 100% 48 re no questions asked,I should know I own a trany shop and have been in there many times.

You are very correct, sir. It's amazing how this "all standard outputs have the 47RE transmission" rumor still persists.

Thanks for all the replies. It seems that I definitely have either the 47re or the 48re (hehehe). There must be a way to tell. Perhaps I need to ask my dealer…… I did not buy the truck new so I don’t have the original window stiker.

True, I owned an 03 that was the 235 hp motor and it had the 48, I believe production date on it was jan 03. The window sticker clearly stated 48re. I remember shopping for a truck then and saw both 47's and 48's in the window sticker.

Steve-

I sent you a PM with my sons 03 VIN#. If your last 6 digits are higher than his chances are real high its a 48, if its lower then you could still have either.
