This is TRULEY amazing to me a man with all this vast knowledge of WILDLIFE because he's a BIOLOGIST and he does some ignorant thing like this :-laf

Goes to prove my point to one of our SELF PROCLAMIED BRAIN-E-ACKS that COMMON SENSE ISNT SO COMMON ANYMORE. I like how he uses words like ASSUMED, SUPPOSED must be different in AK than in MT cause when it comes to bears we use words like MAKE SURE and DID IT.

AND ONE THING ELSE

,,,,,,,,,,,WHERE THE HELL IS YOUR GUN STUPID!!!!!!!!!!!!! but that's JMO :D

Under the circumstance I think Toby Burke did okay. He did protect his family. However, once they saw the bear, they should have left the area for a safe place and call the Alaska State Troopers.

He says he wasn't terrified... too stupid to be! Also said they were mentally prepared for such an incident... how about Bear spray?

I started to wonder if maybe now he has learned something, but by those last two statements, he and his family are bait.

Wasnt terrified :-laf too stupid to be??? ;)

Bear Spray? If the next time you go to Glacier Nat Park on the St Mary side of the park. At the ranger station they have a video that shows a woman using BEAR REPELLENT, They have CHANGED the name of the BEAR REPLLENT to BEAR SPRAY. Why you ask? cause she went out in the parking lot of the Ranger Station at St Mary entrance and applied the BEAR REPELLENT she assumed it was like MOSQUITO REPELLENT :-laf

JUST TIE A PORKCHOP AROUND HER NECK!!!! it will be over SOON!

My Daughter and her boyfriend were hiking around Georgetown Lake by Philipsburg, MT. Her boyfriend took a tumble backwards downhill, the bear spray in his backpack ruptured, it blistered the skin on his neck, back, and butt. It is a very effective product.

It must be!! on the video the visitor dropped to the ground and look like she was break dancing, I started to laugh when we seen the video some lady said REAL FUNNY!!!! Park Ranger eased up behind me and whispered I THOUGHT IT WAS TO!!!!!

JJ I dont know for sure but its supposed to be like 10X stronger than what the police use on people, Personally I try not to get myself in that kind of a jam, I did ONE time and WONT EVEN TAKE MY I-POD with us anylonger. My concern with Bear Spray is the wind in our area it swirls around most of the time and wind direction plays an important role as to the effectiveness EITHER on YOU or the BEAR. You know your out in the mountains people just have to PAY ATTENTINON!!!!!!!

AND HAVE THAT NOT SO COMMON, COMMON SENSE!!

I blasted a can of it(@ $40 a can), just to see how it operated. It is a very strong, heavy mist for about 15', so unfortunately close quarters are necessary before deploying. The wind would have to be exceptionally strong to affect it much. The residue on my fingers burned, do not wipe your face with contaminated hands.

15 Ft????? are you kidding me :-laf Im going to be blasting away with 540 hammerheads if it gets within 50yards at most, Ive seen them move and maybe 50 yards would be pushing it, if it knew I was there and was coming toward me, this one is at about 150 yards and I was STILL TO CLOSE!!!!

Sorry I had the wrong lens and REALLY didnt want to be preoccupied with putting on another one and not watching the bear :-laf

Brown bears have soft , brown poop with berries in it.

Grizzly's have soft, brown poop with bear spray cans in it.

It is for me!!!!

They were more interested in the sammon at Katmai NP, Alaska than they were in us. We were a group of 16 plus the guide and we stayed very close together. To a bear that's too big to mess with, unless you get between them and their cub(s)

Some people are just stupid and completely at a loss with what is around them - also known as situational awareness to pilots (military in particular). Caution is always a good thing around animals, especially ones who are prone to violence like Bears and Moose. I can think of others as well, not as common nor as dangerous.

I worked in the woods for several years in Wyoming, had my moments with moose, never saw a bear tromping through the woods, but they are present. This was before all of the hunting limits and bears kept away from humans in generally wild places.

Isn't that strange? Wy and Mt are not that far apart and I know that there are Moose up here, I have seen ONE!! in all the years we have been coming up here and now live here. But bears BOTH kinds are VERY abundant they are up and moving around now!! and more sightings are happening. Having Black bears in our back yard is nothing, we see them all the time and have 12ga. rubber slugs that are used to help them decide that they are not wanted.

I can get a grip on the " Situational awareness" but NEVER thought it would be used in TAKING OUT THE TRASH AT HOME :-laf

I have seen Grizz more interested in an Elk gut pile than to watch for other intruders, but have seen them attack others fast as lightning (these big clumsy looking guys are DECIVEING) for just looking at their gut pile and it all happened IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE. I also have shown your picture of you and your lovely wife to my in-laws that have been around GRIZZ way more than me and they said the same thing

YOU MY FREIND ARE ONE BRAVE MAN

Well, I don't know if me and mrs. grizz are brave or just fools. We were with a large group and a very experienced guide who does this every day for a living. He's the owner and guide of Bald Mountain Air Service, in Homer Spit, Alaska. He said that in the many years he's been doing this, he has never had an incident with a bear or with the single engine fixed wing aircraft. Everyone did exactly what he said. It was an experience of a lifetime. I'd like to do it again. Mrs. grizz doesn't. What scared her more than the bears was the small aircraft and the long flight.

Grizz

I donate to a Grizzly bear sanctuary and take them some Elk and Deer at hunting season and road kills are also donated. These bears will never go back to the wild some morons have thought that the could make pets of them and couldn't or lost intrest. When we go I take my camera and there is a VERY HEAVY DUTY chain link fence between us and them. There is a little She Grizz that I have kind of made friends with I will put my finger thru the fence and give her ear a scratch (I figure I can loose a finger and still be OK) but there is NO WAY IN HELL I WOULD GET THAT CLOSE TO ANY OF THE BEAR'S WITHOUT THE FENCE and if they really wanted to that fence is a JOKE AT BEST :D

He take a good decision, keep the distance from bear is right strategy because they attack instantly. To protect your self try to keep distance and if you want to go near them be careful and attentive.
