For G56 Owners--start in 3rd?

I tried a couple of 3rd gear starts and it eliminates that awkward 2nd to 3rd upshift in the middle of a turn... makes running with traffic a lot easier. There no shuddering or lugging and the truck doesn't seem to mind.

Am I tearing up the clutch or drastically shortening its life doing this if I only do it unloaded on level or downhill streets?

Has anyone tried a short throw shifter kit for this truck? How well did it work?

you would defineately slip the clutch more starting in 3rd . i can't see anything good about that .

Shoulda got the auto... .



Bad on the clutch. Excess wear on the clutch frictions and release/throw out bearing.

I've got an NV5600 with 4. 10s, so I always need to shift halfway thought a turn from a stop; it doesn't really bother me anymore, I guess I'm just used to it, though.
But I do notice that I slip the clutch a lot more starting in 3rd than 2nd.

I just get rolling in 2nd and then go quickly to 3rd- don't even touch the accelerator until it's in 3rd. Seems to work well, and don't have to slip the clutch.

Merrick: I got such a smoking deal on the truck as it was that it would have cost me $12K more to get an equivalent truck with an auto. Was willing to make a few sacrifices to get a brand new CTD SLT for the same price most people pay for a 1500. Yeah, I kind of wish I had the auto but I'm learning to like the 6-speed... nearly every vehicle I've ever owned has been a stick--just like the extra control and simplicity of a manual.



I agree with nearly everyone else about the G56... the gearing falls a little too short. Next upgrade will be the 3. 42 gears that AAM just came out with and some slightly taller tires (275s). Will also do a short throw shifter kit. These upgrades will happen over time.



600 miles on the truck--no codes, no bugs, no problems. It's an awesome truck and I'm getting around 17-18 on the hwy hand calculated (running 77 mph around 2350 RPM). Get her above 85, though, and RPMs climb north of 2600 and that big cummins starts singing!
