Turbo oil return line troubles

I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a II Phat Shaft 62/ATS manifold and everything I've seen states I need a hx40 downpipe. My question is why as I've never seen one of these before and the diff from the stock one. My other question is do I need a fooler with the Smarty as it is gated at 40. All the info in my sig is current, running the Smarty on 6 right now but with the gate off I baby it to keep boost lower than 42 hence the new turbo. With the gate on it acts "weird" like it's opening at part throttle dropping my boost and EGT rising. I have a stg 3 Snow ready to go on but didn't want to install it with the really high boost(45+)due to no wastegate, don't want to blow the headgasket. Wide open I will spike to 45 and then I think it defuels and my boost drops to 38ish Smarty "fools to 45psi right"? I might tow to 11-12k in the future with a larger boat so I'm going with the 12cm on the PS62. I know I"ve got a lot of questions but I think I will be happy with this turbo and the Snow for top end EGT's. Thanks for any suggestions.

The Smarty is all the boost fooler you will need. BD now makes a version of their excellent Super B that bolts right up on your third Gen, no elbow or downpipe change.

Would the SuperB be enough turbo? It has a 57mm compressor vs. the stock 60mm(I know it has a bigger turbine/exhaust and ext tip wheel). I just want to make sure I have a little room to grow since I have 140K on the injectors and may go to F1 40hp sticks in the future. So how will the Bee compare to a II PS62 or HTT HTB2? Thanks.

I bolted a SPS62 and a Silver62 to my stock downpipe no problem, so unless the ATS manifold changes the exhaust dump placement, you should be fine without an HX40 downpipe.

I believe the new Super B for 3rd gens is not the same 57/65/14 as the secondary on my set of twins, but not sure.

So should I get the downpipe with the ATS or not? And do I have to have it welded in. Ordering today any input appreciated.

Bump

I've got the new turbo now what? With the ATS mani do I have to install ie. the new downpipe and have it welded or will it fit the stocker. I know someone has to know with all the guys running phat shafts and such, any help appreciated before I dig in I don't have a lot of free time to reinvent the wheel with 2 little ones running around. Thanks.

The PS62 requires a HX40 downpipe so hopefully your not running an engine mounted exhaust brake, where the SPS62 and Silver 62 don't.

The Super B hasn't changed from 57/65/14, but there is now a "Killer B", 63/65/14.

Personally I just purchased a Garrett Stage 2 powermax, 62/64/. 89, its a water-cooled, ball bearing turbo.

Where does the ATS dump the exhaust in comparison to the stocker? No, do not weld anything at this point, you can re-use the factory v-band clamp at the turbo end, and pick up a band clamp for the down pipe to exhaust end, do not use a u-bolt type clamp, you have to destroy it to get it back apart in the future.

If the ATS manifold dumps at the same position as the factory, you should be able to use the stock down pipe, I'll be standing by, let me know.

The PS62 has a different exhaust housing than the SPS62?

Kday, a little help for you, bolt the turbo to the new manifold and install the turbo oil drain tube before placing on the truck, much easier. also drain about 4 to 5 gallons of coolant before starting the removal of old turbo, the reason? there is a bracket on the rear exhaust manifold bolt, it holds a coolant line, this has to come apart to get the bolt out. Also, I found cutting through that bracket with a hack saw or sawsall, and then splicing it back together later is the ticket, hope this is helpful. Jess
Also... remove the passenger side inner fender liner, makes access easier.

Yes, that's the main difference in the two. PS62 is a 62/65 the SPS62 is a 62/71. The comp wheel is the same.

I was aware of the difference in turbine size, however I did not realize the exhaust housing had a different type of flange.

Gotcha... I find it interesting as well. When I was first turbo shopping I considered the PS62 until I saw that it takes the HX40 down pipe, it appears to be the only one that doesn't accept the OEM down pipe from II.
