Timing box detection ??

what is a good transmission to use for my 97 12 valve

I posted a ad a while back on who has good rebuilt short blocks

and found out the prices were about $4,000 from piers diesel and cummins west.

I found a guy who is willing to rebuild my short block he was looking at useing cummins west kit for $ 800. 00 for pistons rings beaings gaskets.

My question being is should i go through cummins west and get there kit for $800. 00 or try piers or who else is really a good place to buy my parts from for engine rebuild kits. that will last me 300,000 miles or more.

or should i just get a short block from cummins or piers and then have my head redone.

i want to do the job right the first time and i figure for 6,000

dollars i should be able to get it dun right including parts and labor.

how many miles does your truck have? I rebuilt mine for about $7000 but that was w/ an oringed and machine head, Piers cam, I think some kind of swirl pistons or some crap?, and also included and hx40.

hx 40

It's a turbo. When you rebuild the engine, you should also replace the turbo.

Some places (I believe most) will not honor the warranty unless you do this.

Honey, I saw in another post that you have 140000 miles on your truck. Is there something wrong with the motor that it needs rebuilt so soon. Thats barely broken in. Jeff

while driveing for week and a half i burn 2 gts of oil

and it has a blue white smoke on full throttle.

also while goin down hill if i let off the throttle i get a puff of black smoke for about 4 seconds.

when iam driveing and have to get on the freeway at night it is like a smoke screan and cars behind me are backing away

till i reach 65 then its ok.

also the engine dies if i have the air conditioning on and at a stop i think the idle needs adjusting cause the tach says 500 rpm

a shope told me that # 6 hole has a cracked ring i asked them how they diagnosed the problem they told me by cracking the injector lines.

This is just my opnion, but, I would replace, or rebuild the turbo before you drop that kind of Money into your motor.

The situation you describe, sounds like you have a bad bearing in your turbo.

Alot cheaper to put down $450 on a Rebuilt, and Piersified turbo, than $4K on a rebuilt motor.

Bump up the idle, and it should fix the stalling problem you have.

Hope this helps you.

I'm rebuilding my trashed '98. 5 24V. It has 120,240 miles on it.

Looks like I have either a burned cylinder, or a bad head. I definatly have a killer dowel pin though.

Honey,

I'd get the fuel system checked out first. From your symptoms, it sounds more like a pump/ injector problem. Sometimes a bad injector will cause blue smoke and oil consumption.

ALso, find another shop!!! If they cracked the injector line, *I* dont know how they came up with a bad ring. Is it possible? Sounds like they want the labor from doing an engine swap. Might not hurt to get the turbo checked out, like MCummings said. Also, check under the turbo body, where the oil drain attaches, and see if it is leaking there. How many miles did you drive in the week and a half? THat would be about 5-600 miles for me.

I dont think you need a new engine. I find it hard to believe a B series in a pickup is even WORN after 140K; much less worn OUT. WHen you put the turbo back on, get guages if you dont have them. Put the T-couple in the manifold. I had a 400Deg difference in mine, running empty. 300 is the aggreed shut down temp.

Good luck.

Maybe after cracking the injector they didn't here any change in motor sound, kind of like taking a spark plug boot off a gas engine to tell if you have a dead cylinder.

Get someone to help you check the compression.

Similar to a spark plug wire BUT...

It is also the fuel input. All they did was confirm which cylinder it is. It could be an injector pump issue (worn/damaged part), an injector issue (junk in it or not seating/unseating properly), a timing issue (slipped) or a compression issue. Next step: injector testing or compression check.

It would be very unusual to have a worn or damaged cylinder with that low milage unless Merrick Cummings Jr had it!:D Seriously, it's more likely to be an injector, turbo or pump issue than a serious engine issue.

Did you take it to a Cummins or diesel shop?
