For those with HO 600 4x2's.. mileage..

Hey, now that I have 6,000 miles on "O'l Silver" I wanted to see how she was performing in comaparison to other owners...



Truck is STOCK in every way, 4x2, 2500 , LWB, 3. 73 limited slip gears, 6 speed manual trans... Here's the #'s I am seeing



Open Freeway, 65-70MPH, unloaded = 21-23 MPG



Open Freeway 65-70 MPH, LOADED (7500lbs)= 14-15MPG

(Depends on wind) I pull a gooseneck horse trailer. Also includes some steep (6-7Mi 6% grades to pull)



Around town, short commutes, not really bumper to bumper traffic, to and from work type of stuff = 16-17 MPG



I have noticed that my Overhead computer is sometimes accurate, other times not so accurate. I would guess I average about 2-3 MPG OVER what it is reading.



Are the other 4x2'ers seeing similar mileage?????

Well mine is not a 600 but similar to yours. I see 21 doing 75, 22 doing 70, and 17-18 around town.

Did the rear end replacement change your milage that much?

I saw 20 loaded a few times in a row, now it has slipped and become irregular. . I'm wondering if the new rear end might be dragging a bit????

I had the rear end rebuilt... they won't completely change the axle until it makes a LOUDER noise, they said they couldn't justify it at that time. But when I was getting 20 Loaded, several times in a row, it was WITH the new rear gears, not before... Weird.

I have a 3500 Quadcab SRW 6-speed 3. 73 with a 8ft utility bed. I used it commuting to my SO's house... about 55 miles each way. At 70 mph(about 2200 rpm) I was getting around 17. 0 indicated and hand calc at 17. 5 mpg. The last couple of tanks I have been limiting myself to 2000 rpm/67mph and I am indicating 17. 5 and hand calc at 18. 3mpg. I currently have 3200 miles on the odometer. It weighs 7500lbs without tools. It is a Kalifornia model. I take the time(about 20 minutes) fill it to the rim everytime. Once the pump shuts off, I can put about 6-7 more gallons in the tank. It appears that my mileage will be close to my 2000 QC, but it lacks the pep the 2000 has.

The best I have seen is 19mpg unloaded. Mix city-highway. Last week I filled up and was only 16. 5 with major stop and go traffic. AC always on. Have 7000 miles on now. Put amsoil in the axle also.

I just did a round trip from Las Vegas to Newport Beach, CA. ; about 600 miles. I was at 19,650# or so with my 5th wheel and unless I was on the Baker grade, I was averaging 12. 5 MPG. Much better then the 10 I got earlier. I still have the pinging when under a real load but it is doing better. I used the OD unless I was on a grade too.

Pull at 23000# gross and at 70mph and 2250rpm I get 10. 3 mpg,that's on the flats,in the hills it drops proportional to the grade.

My 3500 4x4 auto with 3:73 is turning 2000 even at 70MPH, I would think that the six speed would be able to go 70 in 6th at a lower RPM Range. That seems odd.



65MPH on my truck is about 1750 or 1800.



Oh, back to the post, mine's a 4x4 but 17-18 on the open road seems to be where it's at of late. A couple of times I was able to get 19. 2 on the highway, I need to check my air filter though, 10000 on the truck now.

The slushbox's top gear ratio is numerically lower, allowing lower revs, than the 6-speed. With my 2000 with 3. 54 rear end, I get 72 mph at 2000 rpm. The 2004. 5 with 3. 73 gets 67 mph @ 2000 rpm. There is about a 150-200 rpm difference at 70mph and a commensurate increase in fuel consumption. I found my tires at 45psi today so I bumped them up to 65 all around and will check the difference in mileage. Just turned 4300 miles today so I know there is more breaking in to do. This 4. 5 HO is a bit doggy in performance compared to the 2000(Edge EZ and DDII's). Throttle response on the 04. 5 is sluggish which keeps the smoke down. Oh well. The price of progress, I guess.
