a quick question, I installed one for a friend and they love it except that they have to listen to the radio in order to use the navigation system anyone know if that is jus user error is that realy the way it is? Thanks for the help

I have been looking into the Mopar navigation system for about 3+ months... What you described is NOT a user error. It IS a function of the system. You cannot use the Nav system and listen to CD's at the same time.

The solution is to install a 6, 10 or 12 CD Changer. Then you can listed to your CD's and have the navigation function... . Down side is the steering wheel controls do not control the volume on the changer... Problem 2 is the changer is under a seat, so to change CD's you have to stop and make the change. Not a big deal as you will likely have a full bladder after 6 CD's, but it is the annoyance of it.

The wife and I want it and are trying to decide how much we listen to CD's... . Mostly on long trips where radio reception is very poor and once and a while other times...

Actually that is not exactly what my question was but you are right I knew about the CD use and the CD changer is not realy that expensive. What I was wondering is whether or not you could turn of the radio portion while still utilizing the navigation system. You cannot just turn down the radio because then you turn down the anouncments. I am looking to see if you can actually turn off the radio portion without turning off the sytem.

This is a user problem. I'm sure the user has it figured out by now, but just in case here goes. The radio must be on for the system to operate but the sound does not have to be turned up. The radio sound can be turned all the way down. The Foxy Lady that tells you which way to turn will continue to give instructions. All you have to do is turn the radio knob up or down while she is talking to increase or decrease the volume on instructions. The point is the radio volume has no bearing on the instructions volume. The instructions volume can only be changed while she is talking.

On a somewhat different note, there will be a new navigation DVD out in June. It's a free upgrade and is much needed as the one that comes with the radio sucks. It has only about half of the addresses/phone numbers I plug into it and very few streets in towns less than 20,000 people. It's a help in the present form but really does need to be improved. Hope the new DVD does the job.

Sure would like to change my signature but can't figure out how right now. Will work on that another time.

MCrossley - yes, unfortunately, you have to listen to SOMETHING in order to use the Nav system. You can try hitting #2 CD/Aux, and if it brings you to a CD-C screen (that won't play anything since you don't have a changer), you can then hit 5-Nav to bring the map back up. I can't try this out, since I also have the changer installed. I can tell you that this DOES work if you have a changer and don't have the magazine in it.

Doc - the steering wheel volume controls work the the changer just fine.

For the life of me I don't know what radio navigation system you guys are talking about. If you are talking about the Mopar Navigation Radio it will certainly navigate without listening to anything. I picked up my new Dodge on the 4th of Mar. , drove it home and installed the Navigation Radio. The truck had 12 miles on it when I picked it up and the trip home was about 30 miles. I have used it every day since and now have 3500 miles on the truck. That includes a trip from Texas to Oregon where I am now. Sometime we listen to the radio and sometime we have complete silence except for the prompts the Foxy Lady gives. You don't even have to listen to her if you turn her down while she is talking.

Hank, I thought I would wait until after June/July to buy my navigation system and then have a free upgrade in June 2004??

Do you think the shelved units will have the upgrade by then?

Thanks, doc

DVD playback

Does anyone know if this system can be modified to playback DVD videos? It uses a built in DVD (not CD) player for the Nav disk, so I would guess that it is possible. Anyone?

Doc, I'm on a trip right now but I think I can come up with a phone number that can answer your question. The number is in my truck somewhere and I will try to email or PM you tomorrow night if I can find it.

nkiewel, I think you are out of luck on any DVD except the navigation DVD that comes with the unit. I believe Task 125 checked on this and the answer is NO. He might come on and give you the documentation.

Hank,

Yes, I'm indeed talking about the Mopar RB1 nav system. With CD's in the CD Changer, there's no way I can get silence while using the Nav system. It's always in one of three modes: AM, FM, or CD Changer.

As I said, when I don't have a magazine in the changer, I can select the CD-C mode (press 2), then return to the Nav screen (press 5), and I'll have silence behind the voice prompts.

I suspect you're using it without a CD Changer, and when it's silent, you have the unit in CD-C mode.

If I'm wrong, please let me know how you're disabling the other audio.

I can also confirm that our unit will NOT play DVD's. I tried - it did absolutely nothing. I've heard rumors that the European version does in fact play DVDs, and that it's a software "lockout" on the US version, due to our laws concerning video playback devices within view of the driver. That part is speculation, however.

BTW - Task, I had my changer mounted underneath the driver's seat, with the opening facing out towards the door. It will clear with the power seat (barely, but it does). This way it doesn't eat into your storage space.

(You could also put it under the passenger seat, but you'd have to lose the factory jack [no big loss] and tools).

Tom, You are right, I don't have the CD changer and have yet to play a CD on the unit. I just use the unit to navigate and of course listen to the radio. I have the satellite radio but haven't installed it yet. Don't plan to buy the CD changer.

MCrossley, Note, I only have the Nav Radio, no CD changer. I plan to install my sat. radio soon and expect everything to continue working just as it is now.

To answer your question all I do is turn the radio volume down to nothing. The Foxy ladies volume does not change on my radio. In fact, when I turn the radio off (volume down to nothing) I usually turn the foxy lady down because she is too loud, no longer has to heard over the radio. I'm sure you know the only way to change the volume of the Foxy lady is while she is talking.
