I am about to put a 5" tip on the stock exhaust and also put a straght pipe in place of the muffler. I was wondering how much louder it is if I pull off the resonator too? Any loss in fuel mileage. Does it smoke more?

Thanks for any help,

JD

Do a search on this topis and I am sure you will find a ton of opinions. Without the resonator at certain RPMS you will get a drone in the cab. My suggestion is either leave the resonator in place, or take the resonator out and use a Dynomax Bullet race muffler, NAPA Part# 24217 about $30. Im sure you will get a lot of opinons on this one, but this is mine.

JBlackwell,

I did this for a short time and the drone just about killed me, I drive my truck about 850 miles a week all interstate and it was bad. Smoke wont be any different and mileage shouldnt change either. You might see a tiny decrease in EGT's but probably nothing to write home about. I was in a bind when straightpiped mine, the stock resonator got trashed when the shop took it off. I got fed up one day and took it back and the only immediate solution was to put in a really long glass pack. That helped the drone but I found it pretty quick why there are diesel and gas engine mufflers. :D When I put my 5" system on I noticed the glass pack was closed off except for about a 1 1/2" hole!!

So in short, the sound bothered my ears but some really like it so to each their own.

I just removed the 3 inch system and went with Rip Rook's 4 inch system with a 40 inch Donaldson muffler and a 5 inch stainless steel tip resenator. The sound is very nice with no drone. When the truck accelrates, there is less clack heard and more of a big rig diesel sound now. Would not have it any other way. :D :D

I ran the 3" for a year straight-piped (truck had 76 miles when muff and resonator came off). After a year, I got tired of the straight pipe 3" and went to straight pipe 4" (Jardine). OOOOHH YEAAAH... . that is the sound I was looking for. The high rpm trumpeting of the 3" is gone, and I do not have the dreaded drone. I also have a regular cab.

I have had a Rip Rooks 4" system for some time now with no muffler and I am very happy? What drone?? I get a slight one at 84 mph, so its not a problem. Its not loud in the cab especially on the highway cruising. Its a bit loud outside, all the men in my neighborhood like it, but some of the women think its a bit loud.

Thanks for the replys guys. I am going to run without the resonator too for a while til I get tired of it and then go to 4". 4" sounds like it is the way to go, but I am going to get out as cheap as possible for now.
