I just was at an auction and bought a 1993 school bus with a 5. 9 cummins. the bus has air brakes and on the build tag on the motor it look just like the 12v out of a dodge except for the ford name and the air pump for the brakes. is there anything different about this motor and the 12v in a 91-93 dodge ram ,, it is also intercooled. it has a brand new injection pump and I am a little up set it fires up quicker than my 03 CTD 2500. I thought it would make a cool swap into something else, it is mated to an allison at545.

the VE pump is a quick starter! not good for the epa but it starts @ full fueling so you'll see a little black puff @ startup which is eliminated in the '03 but the tradeoff is more cranking and slow to start.

Whats the rated HP on the tag on the timing cover? Does the exhaust manifold and turbo look the same? How many miles are on it? If you could post a few pics of what the motor looks like w/ accessories that would be great. I've wondered how easy these would be to adapt to a conversion.

In commercial applications, the 5. 9 used the P-Pump on 190, 210 and 230 hp models, the 160 used the VE pump. I think this started in 91.

Mine (here @ the school) has the Ford 6. 6L diesel. I guess the heavy duty applications use the Ford engine.

The exhaust manifolds are nothing like what is used on the Dodge. I'd have to believe, from what I have seen in the industry, the Dodge application is spacific to that.

Another thing is the belt tensioner. They too are spacific. The fuel lines/intake cover is another. Oil pan.

I could probably list a few more that vary from application to application.

It is the same hp 160 hp and 400 tq, I will take some pics and post them as far as how much I paid , this will make you sick I bought the bus at a storage auction for a whooping $450. 00 , I had seen the bus a week before the auction and pulled the hood open and saw that it had a new ve injection pump and even had found some paper work on when the pump was replaced ( which i put in a not so easy to find place in the bus), it has brand new tires on the front and new recaps on the rears. the tow yard didnt have a key so they could not start it and they parked it against a big van so no one was able to look under the hood. only 2 other people bid against me . after the auction i looked all over the bus and found a hide akey and it fired right up and drove it home. , Ii have a guy down here already begging to buy the motor for $2500. but I think I will hang on to it. I am into it so cheap I wont miss the 450. 00 but will kick myself in the butt if I sell it. I beat this set up the 12v and allison would be motor swap into something. Oh yea it has a ton of miles on it I think it is 106,000 and some change, hehehehe!!!

Great find - and buy!

You sure can't go wrong on a deal like that - guys with the 1st generation trucks would KILL to have that engine/transmission under their rigs... :-laf

The school near me just sold their last 5. 9 first gen at bid for $3,900.

Sold for export. To where I don't know. I guess "keep it simple" still has value.

$450, you can't go wrong with a buy like that. You could probably take the drivetrain out and get $450 in scrap for it, and still have the wheels/tires/etc to sell. What are the details in the AT545, isn't it a 5 speed non od? That would make a great tow rig drivetrain in a 2wd.

Our 1989 Bird with 5. 9 and AT545 brought us 50. 00. The transmission is post toasties. Seems someone boosted the VE w/hot injectors and took out the trans. :p

It's(545) a 4 speed no OD.

i put a bluebird bus engine and 545 transmission in an 83 1st gen crewcab,

the pan,fan idler, and a few other small changes and it worked fine, turn the exhaust manifold over and that worked too.

i used the front engine mount out of the bus and made new frame mounts so the transmission side mounts would work.
