Ford 6.0 head gasket question

Take a look.

Wet Sleeves?

I talked to a mechanic today that clamed that to remove the head gaskets on a 6. 0 P. S. the engine had to be removed from the truck? And to remove the engine the body had to be partially removed? This could not possibly be true, could it? I hope for Fords sake they did not engeneer something like this. We do not need another diesel fiasco ala GM.

I think it might be true. There is a thread running around here somewhere with links to pics of a ford that was gutted like a fish.

I am not sure whether or not the engine must be pulled to yank a head... I hope not. From what I hear it is easier to lift the body off the frame of that truck to remove the engine than it is to attempt a straightforward engine pull.

has to be pulled because it sits so far back under the cowl area that they can't get the heads off with it in the truck

here is a work in progress

I too heard the motor needed pulled. Somethin about a 2 piece head. Part iron part aluminum. When everyone went to cab forward it made it harder to work on the motor. Have you looked at an 03 cummins.

Put head gaskets in my 6. 9L a couple yrs. ago. Wasn't to bad.

They just make it harder and harder every time they change the truck. Keep stuffing the motors in farther every time.

That is one of the main reasons that went with the Dodge/Cummins. I didn't want to work have to do that on a S/D w/PSD. Couldn't find a '94-'97 the way I wanted it that was anywhere close to me. All were over 200 mi. away. Most had either 2wd, short-box, reg. cab or they wanted more than I wanted to spend.

Been VERY happy with my choice. Will do it again whenever I trade someday.

No need to remove the cab assembly to remove the engine on a Super Duty truck... I've seen it done before. Its not too bad to remove the engine. :)

What??????????

That is the most asinine engeneering bit of cr#p I have ever seen in my years of wrenching. How can people possibly be forced to pay for this kind of operation that will have to be done sometime in the life of the vehicle. Did Ford actually think the new PS engine would last longer than the rest of the vehicle? Maybe Toyota will buy them out and end the suffering?

I'm referring to the 1994. 5-2003 7. 3L PowerStroke. The 6. 0L is a POS... Talked to an engine rebuilder today, and he said he's already seen a slew of porous blocks come through his shop. :--)

Oh my! Can you imagine walking in the shop and seeing your truck body on the hoist and her guts on the ground like that? I'd come unglued! Of course, as my sig says "ex Ford tech". I got real tired of fixing their poor excuse's for engineering.

Can you imagine the opportunity for squeaks, rattles and weird failures throughout the life of the truck?

We have it made, not only can we pull the head easily in frame, The best part is we'll never have to!

Head gasket

I have just had a replaced head gasket on my 2001 Dodge Cummins. It looked as though the gasket was malformed. Sorry to say even the best of them can have problems . . "If it is built by man then man can break it"
