Back in the fold

I was talking with a Ford mechanic. He mentioned the 6. 0's will leak oil if any type of aftermarket air cleaner is added. The engine was designed for stock filtration. The extra air causes some type of extra pressure which produces oil to fill a upper reservoir. At the back of the block the reservoir only holds so much oil. It will eventually overflow and leak. Apparently, the oil leak will saturate the clutch.

He did admit to engine problems with the 03' and 04's. To date he hasn't repaired any 05's.

Hmmm... . sounds like they're using inlet depression downstream of the air filter for venting crankcase vapors. This is done in a number of turbocharged industrial engines to pull a slight vacuum on the crankcase. Lose the vacuum and the engines will slobber oil like a pig!

Interesting... . The brand new 6. 0 we drove yesterday... . after the test drive the dipstick tube had popped up out of the tube... . very possibly due to blow-by..... Sounds like a great engine to me... .

:-laf a little tidbit of info, that 6. 0 was originally designed to have a throttle body... they had it in there [ecm controlled] to assist in the egr function [to create a lower pressure area to suck more egr crap into the intake]. . i have a copy of that 2003. 25 ford 6. 0 manual that was floating around on the net when that engine first came out... i was looking through it for the heui stuff, and came across it... i thought it was funny... being it drives like a gasser, it has some of the necessary parts off a gasser :-laf

A friend of mine here at work had his brandy new 05 model 6. 0 back in the shop for a major oil leak under the hood. It has less than 7000 miles on it. He still wants to put a juice on it. I'd be scared of loosing the warranty myself.

I couldn't remember the technical reason. This might be it. I asked about diverting the oil to the ground like my 12v. He said the hole is plenty big enough to add something but Ford hasn't seen fit to do so.

The mechanic also mentioned many boxes on the market will throw a code. The way around this would be to have a code reader capable of deleting codes before going in for work. But, this brings up "I am my own warranty" dilemma.

I was at the Dayton Auto Show this afternoon and there was a 2005 F-250 with the 6. 0. I crawled under it and noticed a nice bellhousing drip.
