A Lightening strike this morning left a motorist stranded on highway 31. The vehicle was traveling from Athens to Corsicana when the strike occurred. The driver said they heard a huge boom and everything in the dash started flashing before the truck shut down. He coasted to the shoulder and the passenger noticed flames coming from under the dash. Thankfully both occupants were able to get out safely!

Yes, Aluminum can melt in a normal fire just fine. I once found, what I think, leftovers from a molten engine block in the desert.

That lightened the truck a lot. Once they remove the chunks it should be good for another 1/2 mpg and the easy in easy out option.

They do well in rear end crashes too. The bed is an enormous crumple zone. I've seen one that sustained a thrashing.

Almost looks like it was Magnetic Grey, which probably didn't help. On more serious note I'd be curious how much melted from the strike and how much from the resulting fire...MTBF and all that.

Like the steel cabs are any more reusable after a fire like this: NOT!. IMO they just noticed a "BOOM!"and ASSumed it was lightning rather than something shorting or a battery blowing up. Loss of cooling and things burn to the ground here on grades all the time.

If the aluminum cabs don't rust through...

So anything IN the bed gonna be coming through the cab as the bed "fails"? I suggest the tag hitch gets hit first and you feel that without any of the crumple zone. The frame bends and tears with a real good hit...
