Guns, Bows, Shooting Sports, and Hunting Wilderness revolver .......

Folks,

My work truck (belongs to my employer) is an 06 F-250 with a 5. 4 gasoline engine. The check engine light has been on and the Ford dealer says it is code P0430 - "Catalyst efficiency below threshold - bank 2. "

The dealer says the drivers side cat on the Y pipe is bad and they want $1800 to replace it.

My questions is... I would think the O2 sensor that is just behind the cat is what is telling the computer that the cat is not up to par. Could the problem be the O2 sensor?

Anyone else have any experience with this?

Thanks,

Blake

Usually with the PO420 and PO430 it is the cats, but there is a long list of checks down the trouble tree in the Ford service manual before you get to cat replacement. Has there been an episode of significant multiple cylinder skips?

Yep, the two back coils got swamped with water after a cold, windy, rainy night and the truck missed it's way to the dealer one morning.

The dealer is correct. A 420 and 430 code usually follows even a short amount of time with skip(s). This is not limited to Fords, though. Are you emission tested?

No, we're not emission tested. They do do a little looksee to see if the basic equipment is there during a regular annual inspection.
