6.5 Suburban PMD Questions

I am seriously considering trading in my jeep for an excursion. I have found 2 locally on line. The first one I found has over 150,000 miles on it. According to the carfax it is a CANADA car. It is a 2000 model year. for most of its life it has been a DOT vehicle. It has moved from Idaho and then into WA state. In 2006 it was sold at auction and had 118,000 miles on it. Last month it was sold at auction again and listed as a reposession. Now it is sitting at a dealer and waiting for sale. It is listed for 15K . Is this too much for this high of mileage? Should I run away? The second one I found is a 2002 with a seriuos lift kit and huge tires. It has about 62,000 miles on it and they want25K for it. This one does seem nicer. They are both Limited Edition models. The second one has DVD player in dash. Both headrests have screens in the back. And who knows what else. It doesn't even book out above 18K. But with all the extras on it I don't know. If you guys had a choice which one would you choose and why? I am leaning towards the 2002. I just hope it doesn't cost me too much to have it put back to normal height. I do believe I was told that the 2002 has an EDGE chip installed.

I would choose neither but I guess my wants and needs are different than yours.

The 2002 with big wheels and tires and a "chip" would not even be on my list for consideration. It has been abused. Adding large wheels and tires to a very heavy vehicle with limited power then a chip means to me that the engine, trasnsmission, and driveline have taken a lot of abuse. I wouldn't give $2500 for it.

Between the two I would select the high mileage older and stock unit. It probably never hauled anything more than passengers and a light boat trailer and was maintained by a provincial government maintenance shop if your Carfax info is accurate. 150k miles on an old PS that wasn't towing heavy means it should have lots of life left. I might pay $8k to $10k for it.

Large, heavy, inefficient vehicles like an Excursion are not selling very well in most areas and may become boat anchors if fuel prices rise again as they did a year ago.

If you want an Excursion... I would get the stock one with more miles. 7. 3's that have performance chips usually have more injector/pump issues. It seems that they are asking too much for either of them...

First what do you want the X for. Second I have 2005 X with the 6. 0 and 117,000 miles on it. The weight of this big SUV is 9,300 lbs so taken it off road would make it problematic at best.

I have been one of the lucky ones with no issues with the 6. 0 engine. Buyer beware that 6. 0 had alot of problems.

The other point the retail on my 05 4X4 is $18,000 the dealers are asking way to much for SUV.

miles per gallon

Thanks for the feedback guys, looks like I might choose the higher mileage one. I am needing an EX because I am cramped when I drive my JEEP. The EX is the only one I know of that comes close to being able to go a long ways. I drive over 300 miles a week to work round trip. I also need this rig for getting groceries and winter driving in bad weather.

I would wait you can pick them up much cheaper than either of those,I purchased my 02 last april with 70000 miles and a limited model for 16,800. I would just look around . I use to see alot them listed in Texas also.

In 2000 and 2001 I imported Dodges from Canada because you could buy them about 25% cheaper then when you purchased them here... I knew a guy who bought lots of used Fords and did the same thing... when they come to the US... the importer has to have them DOT inspected and upgraded... The Dodges at the time were built here so only needed minor upgrades... . changes in the display from the metric system to the US system etc...

Since I do business in Canada it was a simple task to buy and bring the truck back... let it sit in a bonded warehouse until the changes were made and the vehicle inspected... usually less than 3 weeks... I was buying new. . but lots of Ford and Dodge dealers in Canada had a special 1 year lease... those lease returns would come back to the US under different rules than new vehicles... . the importer I used, handled mostly trucks... and usually did 600 or so a year... .

As the dollar in Canada gained to the US dollar this went away...

I easily could write 2-3 pages on this... but hopefully this answers the questions... these are not gray market vehicles an can be purchases with the same considerations as any used vehicle. .

What ever you buy, stay away from the 6. 0 diesel. I drove a 7. 3 Excursion as a tow vehicle for a guy I worked for. It was a good vehicle. I worked at UPS for 30 years and we had alot of 7. 3 powered package cars and 2, 28ft bobtail vans. The 28 footers had 550,000 miles on the origional 7. 3's... a little low on power but still ran well. My $0. 02

7.3

I just picked up the 7. 3 yesterday and drove it home. Alot more room to kick back and stretch out. It might be a little under powered but i am fine with that. This will be my winter truck as I have studded tires that will fit this. There are a few things such as small light bulbs and lenses and the rear lift gate struts that I need to replace. Other than that I think that this will be a good vehicle for me. Do you guys think I should buy a stanby CPS (camshaft position sensor) ?

At UPS, That seemed to be the one common thing that would fail "out of the blue". They would just not start without any warning. I think that they are easily accessed. Running the miles you are going to run, I might replace it and keep the old working one as a spare.
