Ford Wastegate Question

OK Guys, Anyone know how to disable the wastegate on a '97 PSD? My girlfriend's Dad is tired of letting extra boost pressure go out the exhaust. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

'94. 5-97 PSD's were not wastegated. ATS makes a wastegated turbo for the 94. 5-97's.



Ford came out with the new turbo in '99, with the Super Duty. And in mid-99, they came out with the present version. To disable these wastegates, you install a bleed oriface between the signal line and the wastegate actuator. A better way is to install an adjustable actuator.

Let me make sure I got this right.

I had thought that ATS made the turbos that came stock on PSD's. If I get what you are saying, then there is no wastegate meaning that there is no lost boost. I haven't looked around under his hood yet, I just thought I'd try for a quick answer here.

That should be right, there is nothing that can limit boost other then the fuel if you don't have a wastegate. This is basic, there are a ton of other things that can limit boost.



What are your boost #'s right now? If you have lost boost, ask Evan, he knows PSD's

The PSD's use a Garrett turbo. Pre 99's had no wastegates. The wastegate should help with initial acceleration not hinder it. It is closed out of the hole and begins to open as boost builds up... CJ

Hook a boost gauge up to that thing, and see what it goes to... Look for 15-16 psi at WOT. If its lower than that, I'll lay odds that its got boost leaks and/or exhaust leaks, stealing performace. Simple fixes for both problems, but can be labor intensive. Let me know if there's anything else I can help with.



ATS did make the turbos for the 94 7. 3IDI. Ford chose to go with ATS as a factory turbo diesel option. IMHO, the ATS system is lousy... Fortuantely, they only had it for half a year...

You can help your girlfriends father get more boost. Take him for a ride over to the nearest Dodge dealer.

QRTRHRS: I've been trying that since before I was dating his daughter. It hasn't worked yet, but his patience with brand "F" is wearing thin. Ironically, he is the one that found MY truck for me and took me to look at it.



Evan: 10-4 on the boost gauge. I would also bet that there are a ton of leaks on the thing. Its giving him more problems now. It stalled on him several times on his way to work the last few nights (he works midnight). I think maybe I should drive him to the Dodge dealer on the way to the parts store.

I bet his truck just stalls out of the blue, and then restarts fine, right? Well...



To fix the stalling problem, replace the CMP (cam position sensor). All PSD's are plagued with this problem... The part is not cheap, about $187 from Ford. The CMP is located on the front of the engine, kind of near the water pump. They are a pain to change, but this will fix the stalling problem.



***If the cam sensor completely fails, the truck will not start. Tell him to buy two--so he has an extra in the truck.
