Are Your Trailer Brakes Adjusted?

Road hazards have a tendency to suddenly appear without warning. Add a trailer behind you and there's no time to second guess your ability to stop. In order for trailer brakes to perform as designed, proper adjustment is crucial. Improperly adjusted trailer brakes can greatly sacrifice stopping distance, potentially putting you and your cargo in harm's way.
In the past, trailer owners had to ensure that time consuming manual adjustment had been routinely performed. Now there's no need to worry. Nev‑R‑Adjust™ brakes, only available from Dexter, automatically adjust to proper clearances during travel, allowing you to stop with confidence. Demand better braking. Demand that your trailer be equipped with Dexter's new Nev‑R‑Adjust™ brakes.

are they any good?

Automatically adjusting brakes of similar design have been used on autos for many years, and USUALLY work well and are trouble free - no reason that applying that principle to trailer wheels would be any more a negative issue - it's more like, why wasn't it available earlier - especially since disc brakes now seem to be gaining ground in RV use...

I believe this is the brakes that are on my HH. I say, "I believe" because I haven't pulled a wheel and brake drum to look inside but I did copy the p/n off the back and ask Dexter because I had never heard of forward adjusting self-adjusting trailer brakes and HH didn't explain in any of their literature.

Mine have 20k miles on them, have not been manually adjusted, and work great.

I paid a modest fee for the optional larger brakes and personally think they are a better choice than the very expensive disc brakes option.

Since I get under our trailer at least once a year to check wheel bearings anyway, the few minutes additional to check and adjust brakes is no big deal - I adjust mine for only the SLIGHTEST bit of drag, to keep rolling resistance to a minimum, and the adjustment usually is good for a couple of seasons at the rate we tow.

The KIT 5er we have had Dexter axles on it when we bought it new in '88 - but we never had decent brakes with the Dexter setup - and that, combined with the poor brakes on the old '91 truck made for a few  experiences. .

After buying the new '02, I needed to flip the 5er axles anyway for better truck bed clearance - and by then the 5er axles needed a complete overhaul anyway - so bought and installed a new set of axles with Hayes brakes, and MAN what a difference - like night and day - dunno what the issue was with the dexters, but been completely happy with the Hayes setup so far...

It says "new"... . is it new in the weight class or totaly new design? We have a Y2K flatbed with 10k dexter's (or 12k? jeeze I cant think) with a self adjusting brake. I havent messed with them yet-- dad usualy does the service on that trailer --but I'm pretty sure they are the "forward" adjusting kind, from what I saw in the Redneck book, although I dont recall the Nev-R-Adjust name.

**Anyway** IF they are the same technology, I think these things are great. 100% brake available on every application, all the wheelends are even, and in all these years the only adjustment at all was when dad pulled a drum for somthing or another one time. They'd be awsome under my camper.

Obert, I had the same question when I received the e-mailed advertisement from Dexter a few days ago. I don't know.

My HitchHiker ordered early in 2007 and delivered in May 2007 has Dexter brakes that I believe are forward adjusting. They work great as you described. Not long after I got the trailer I read a post about "forward adjusting" brakes on the HitchHiker website and was confused. I sent an e-mail to Dexter and was told my brakes are forward adjusting.

Maybe Dexter is just announcing them as if it is a new product trying to stimulate sales in a soft RV market. I don't think even the manufacturers who installed them were advertising the fact that the brakes were forward adjusting. The HH literature only claimed self-adjusting.
