towing modifications

5er conversion to ball hitch

:) Well, after much head scratchin trying to figure out how to put my new Honda in the bed of the Dually, and have it fit under the folding bed cover, I finally realized the obvious. Putting it in the bed wasn't going to work. I had 20" of room under the cover, and a 22" generator. On this last RV trip to the Beach I had the generator in the bed of the truck, but had some concerns about leaving it out in the weather. This weekend in So Cal we are still having record rainfall in the wettest year on record.

What I finally realized is that with just fractions to spare, the honda slid into the front storage area of the fiver Oo. Now I can leave it in the rig, and not have to lift that heavy son-of-a-gun each time. :-laf I am going to run a hard wire to the converter in the back of the rig so I can have the plug in the same compartment with out running an outside power cord. 6gauge stranded wire should suffice.

Now i'm thinking of popping the $239 for the remote starter that is advertised in Trailer Life. Has anyone tried one of these remotes? The concept sounds great but would like some real life experience with it. Any thoughts on the process are welcome :-{} I love healthy discussion before I make the changes... ...

Check the floor...

Sarge, that is where my smaller 2000 Honda gen rides. But, be sure the floor of the compartment is strong enough. On my trailer, the compartment floor is steel and just tack welded in. One trip to Pismo and most of the welds had broken from the weight of the gen and normal bouncing down the road.

Kyle, that was the next question. I don't know if the remote start on the generator will be similar. How long did it take you to install??

Has anyone tried mounting an EU3000 in a 5er generator compartment on sliding tracks? CW has some tracks that should work for this, if there is room for the mechanism.

ken ,, saw some pics on this forum a while back. . http://www.rv.net/forums/index.cfm/CFB/1.cfm Not sure which 5 er ,but the tracks worked great . A buddy of mine cut a hole in floor of front compartment and put a piece of plywood that is removeable to cover hole . removes plywood and lowers honda 3000 by an inexpensive winch. for fueling and fume purposes . . seems to work OK
