Is there such a thing as a b series four cylinder? I thought that they were used in some backhoes and other tractors. I was thinking it would be cool to put one of these in a mini truck or something. If you could tweak it a bit you could get some pretty good ponies out of it and get fuel mileage 50% better than a 5. 9, I should think. If anyone is familiar with them, do you know what bell housing pattern would be needed. Are they the same as a 5. 9 in that respect. For that matter, is a Cummins 5. 9 the same as a Dodge gas V8?

Brian-

Yes, there is a B series 4 cylinder. It's 3. 9 litres. Some even have a P7100 pump, which means it can be tremendously bombed, too!:D The guy in the link below is getting 165 HP and 460 ft-lbs out of his 4 BTA.

For some neat info, and specs on the 4BTA3. 9 (click back to "main page" at bottom of Scout info) go to:

Hope this helps.

Sounds pretty cool but my filter would not let me access that URL. I work for a school district. Is the engine in a Scout? What sort of transmission set up does he have? Where do you get these motors? A guy around here has been advertising a Cummins motor for a Case loader for $900. Maybe I should give him a call.

Brian-

The site above is by a private guy who has done numerous Cummins conversions, mostly into Scouts. He states that the factory drivetrain would not hold up to the power of the Cummins, so he swapped in an NV4500, NP205, Dana 61 HD full floater rear, and left the stock Dana 44 for the front. Somewhere on the site I remember reading mpg figures of 30-34 or so for one of his vehicles, but can't find it now. Unfortunately, his email link is invalid, so there's no way to contact him.

The 4B's can be found in step-van delivery trucks such as Frito-Lay trucks or uniform/laundry delivery vehicles. Also in Case products as you have found. The $900 sounds like a smokin' deal! I bought a Scout that someday will have a 4BT in it...

Good luck!:)

The 4bta is a popular marine engine as well.

There is a 155 hp version rated at 2800rpm, and a 250 hp version rated at 3000 rpm. The 250 uses a 7100 series pump.

More about these engines can be found in the 'conversions' threads.

That sounds pretty cool. How plentiful are these engines? Do they all have turbos? I'm still trying to get familiar with the injector pump types. Is the P7100 the type that is on the 5. 9 series I? How many common parts are shared by these engines? Does anyone know about the bell housing pattern? How do I acces the "conversions thread"?

The conversion thread is one of the main topics once you are in"discussion forums".

The Bosch 7100 series pump is on the 2nd gen trucks from 94 thru 98+ I believe... it is the in-line style pump. Most of the higher HP marine engines use this pump as well.

The 155 hp marine engine and the older 4bta engine use a rotary type pump I believe.

Both marine engines are turbocharged... that is the 't' in 4bta. (a is 'aftercooled') I think most if not all of the truck engines are as well.

Thed engines share some commonalities... . same bore and stroke... is is 4 6ths of a 6b engine.

Poke thru the conversions subjects and you will find answers to your bellhousing and availability questions.
