I have had this problem for a few months now. When I'm driving and put it into 4 hi, the 4wd light comes on the dash. But after a while it will say SERV 4WD. I will try and put it back into 2WD on the selector switch, but it will only flash or not turn the 4WD light off of the selector switch. Now when I'm driving the 4WD light on the dash will start coming on even when I'm in 2WD. It will go on for a few seconds then off. I have about 98k miles on a 04 Quad. A couple of times I heard this hard squeeling noise when I successfully disengaged 4WD while driving. If anyone has had this problem, I would appreciate some suggestions before I go blindsided into a service department.

The SERV 4WD , should be like a trouble code , saying that the 4wd needs service , some times dirt / moisture can get in the box on axial that shifts the axial into gear , keeping it from going in & out easily .
I'm guessing its out of warranty , so do not take to dealer , unless you think you have a good one , or no options .
If you gave more info , like location & truck signature filled in , in the user control panel .
You may get a recommendation of a shop in your area , hard to do if you do not say where your at .

This is true, but I'm not sure whether the code will appear during a normal check codes sequence.

To see if you have a code stored in the main computer, turn the key from "OFF" to "RUN" 3 times, leaving it in RUN the third time. Codes will be displayed in the odometer window.

There's a fairly long and involved troubleshoot procedure for electronic shift transfer cases in the service manual.

I have a couple of options besides the dealer. My Dodge dealer, for the most part, is OK with fixes. I have to keep my eye on them though. Sometimes they like to get extra charge happy with "supply fees" and "service charges".
