My four wheel drive light is stuck on. It doesn't matter if the truck is in 4 wheel drive or 2 wheel drive. Is the sensor built into the shift fork on the front axle?

Yes, the dash light is turned on by the motor on the front axle. Sounds like yours may be stuck in the engaged position.

Thats possible. The transfer could be disengaged but the axle may still be in the 4WD position and will not hurt anything other than maybe a little fuel mileage. I know the newer trucks have a solid axle without the disconnect. Some even go as far as eliminating the axle coupler all together so that it can't fail when you need it most.

It's easy to find though, follow the wires on the front axle. They connect to the switch that turns on the dash light. The coupler is moved with the vacuum lines.

Try to spin the front drive shaft. No spin, CAD engaged. Look over your vacuum lines from the transfer case to the CAD (central axle disconnect) Mike

I've replaced several of the vacuum switches on the transfer case for this problem. Reverse the lines on the shift motor and see if the light goes out. If so, then the vacuum switch is stuck.
