Davey, I like your reference to the fourteen bolt axles on the GM stuff, but the number of bolts has little to do with quality. They just keep the leaks from occuring. Quality is about ring gear runout, pinion bearing support, carrier bearing alignment and end play. Fact is, the Dana axles have cost Chrysler more warranty expenses than we will ever know. The switch to AAM axles could be a Godsend. I like your reference to the AAM's being superior, and let's hope you are right!
So far, Dana has cost Jeep two rear axles and one front on my bride's Grand Cherokee!
That's in 9000 miles!

When a differential is referred to in number of bolts that doesn't mean how many bolts hold the cover on, it reefers to how many bolts hold the ring gear to the carrier.

You sure??? I don't think thats the case... . loser LOL #ad
I have always been told its by the cover. Chevy would never think to put 14 bolts on the ring gear. That 6. 5 sure as heck doesn't need them. Maybe 2... 3 if its a 5 speed

You can only tell the difference by counting cover bolts on GM's car applications. Some of Chevys 12 bolt differential only have 10 cover bolts. Open up your Richmond Gear catalog it describes in detail the differences and how to tell them apart.

Clark, you should stick with the Mopar stuff... LOL #ad

All 14 Bolts have 14 bolts on the cover. The Semi float and the full float. The 12 Bolt is an older axle, and all of the truck axles have 12 bolts on the cover, if its a not a 14 bolt. Later they went to the 10 bolt, smaller ring gear and smaller axle shafts. The way the housing looks is the easiest way to tell the difference. I dont have any knowledge of car axles so all of this talk is truck axles. All in all you can tell the difference and distinguish the axle you are looking at by counting the bolts. Except the 14 bolt. You will need to look to see if it has the hub thats sticks out from the brake drum or see if it is flush.

GM 14 bolt full floaters use 12 bolts to hold the ring gear on. Just went and checked an old gear set. Dana 60's also use 12. The newer 10 bolts are a bit stronger than the old ones (at least in some applications), but are still comperable to a Dana 44. The best part about a 14 bolt is they are dirt cheap, and a Detroit is about $320. The worst part is that the ground clearance sucks.

I had a guy ask me "Why does everybody want a 12 Volt rear when a 10 Volt one would run faster on 12 Volts"

It was hard to answer him without busting up.

Ron, I was just replying to a comment about the "GM pos American Axle Co". The trend right now in the four wheeling world is the swapping in Dana 60's and GM 14 bolt full floaters. The 14 bolt ff is one of the most indestructable axles ever made and was wondering if it was classified in the "GM pos" category. As for the Dana, they(Dana 60)were used in the front of virtually every 3/4 and 1 ton truck from the 70's through to today that came with a solid axle. Also a lot of Jeeps that are used in rockcrawling competitions(very hard on parts) upgrade from the factory axles to Dana 44's or the aforementioned Dana 60's. That says a lot for the company's past. Now as far as the CAD Dana 60 in our rams..... #ad
