Hey guys... want to get my fp gauge put in... I have the Geno's Billet fuel-filter cap, and an isolator between that and gauge...

Do I need thread sealant on the connections?

If so, can you recommend a good one, I can't find one that's safe to exposure to fuel.

Thanks!

Permatex makes a good thread sealant (liquid) that I have read about on here, but I cant remember the part #, sorry. some will say use Teflon tape, and some argue against it, so its your choice

I've used teflon tape that was specifically made for fuel connections. I think I got it from Grainger. As long as you are careful to keep the tape on the threads there shouldn't be a problem with using it.

The regular white teflon tape is no good. I used it and had to redo mine after about 6 months. I used the permatex(small white tube) and it is working great. I got it at O'reilly's. I think the good teflon tape is yellow.

Another source is plumbing supply stores. They will have thread sealer that is good for use with fuel oil. I use this stuff called Tef-Seal on the vent kits. It says right on the can it's good for use with fuels.

Thanks as well... Is this something I could get at Home Depot?

I just picked up Megaloc multi-purpose thread sealant made by Hercules at my local plumbing supply house. #15-806 It states on the back recommended for Diesel fuel oil. 1/2 pint is only $9. 00.

I have used the regular teflon tape on both of my truck at the billet cap. No problems, but it was only 1 connection at the cap to the electric Westac sending unit.

Hint - break that connection after about 6 months and see what the white Teflon tape looks like.

If it does not leak, why would I want to break it? (Not flaming, just curious)

The first one that I did ('01 2500) was on for about a year. I took off all the gauges, senders, etc... to put on the new truck. I did not see anything out of line. If this really is an issue, please enlighten me as to what I should see, but if no leaks... ?

The white Teflon tape disintegrates into small, gummy shreads when exposed long term to diesel fuel. You're right, of course - if it doesn't leak, you'll never notice it. With my experience with Westach senders, though, these connections get a pretty good workout. If you must use Teflon, I'd suggest the yellow tape or thread compound that's rated for hydrocarbon service.

Permatex #2 has been used in the oil field to seal gasketed and threaded joints against petroleum (crude oil and refined products) for decades. It's cheap and readily available. That's why I suggested it.
