this is a question that was posted to fram tech support

in the

northeast dodge dealerships and auto parts stores are

not recommending the use of your oil filters on this application. in part

due to problems real or imaginary with filters not holding together under

pressure. i have noticed that part#ph3976 has been replaced by ph3976a. does

this rev change address these ealier problems that might have been

associated with your product on the cummins turbo diesel i look forward to

your response.

thank you

there response to this was... ... ...

Thank you for the e-mail regarding the recommended Fram oil filter for your

1999 Dodge Ram 2500 series truck with the 5. 9L Cummins diesel engine. We

welcome the opportunity to be of service.

According to our data, the PH3976 and the PH3976A are the recommended Fram

oil filters for your 1999 Dodge 2500 series truck with the 5. 9L Cummins

diesel engine. The PH3976A is a running production change improvement that

replaces the PH3976. However, the filtration media used in both versions

remains unchanged. There is considerable finger pointing, unsubstantiated

comments, and accusations directed at the aftermarket filter manufacturers,

including Fram. Yet, our representatives, that have investigated these

claims, have not found any evidence to confirm that the Fram filter is

responsible for clogging the oil flow passages in these Cummins diesel

engines.

The replacement of the PH3976 with the PH3976A is due in part to the

Chrysler claims of neoprene residue, among other contaminants found in the

engine, contributed to the engine damage. Fram voluntarily replaced the

neoprene sealant used in the end cap construction of this filter. The

redesign of this filter provides uniform continuity where the end cap meets

the tapping plate as well as reducing Chrysler's concerns by removing an

element that they believe is suspect in these engine related issues.

Again, no conclusive evidence has been presented to prove that the Fram

PH3976 or PH3976A filter is the cause of the engine damage claim issues.

The removal of the neoprene sealant was necessary to "rule out" the Fram

filter as a contributor to these engine damage claim issues.

Fram continues to stand behind and endorse the use of the PH3976 and the

PH3976A oil filters in the 5. 9L Cummins diesel engine.

Thank you for choosing Fram filters.

Cordially,

I appreciate you taking the time to contact Fram. I cut open a Fram filter myself to see wha t the hoopla was all about. I WOULDNT PUT A FRAM ON A 10 YEAR OLD LAWNMOWER. Cant say enough BAD about it. Cut one open yourself and see, it's junk. I suppose it might filter out 3/8" gravel, possibly.

SAME HERE

That last issue of out TDR had a real good filter article. I won't run fram at all. Too bad though, I'm real impressed by their reply.

I don't care what Fram says about the "quality" of their filters. What manufacturer is going to say their product is a piece of crap?

I don't see ANY reason to take a chance with my $30,000+ truck.

I use Stratopore filters and get a warm and fuzzy knowing I'm

well protected.

Disclaimer: This is not to say there are not any other good

aftermarket filters out there. I use WIX on my gasser. I think

Fram = POS.

My 2 cents...

I think it's cute how the Fram response tries to diffuse and/or redirect the attention directed solely at Fram:

"There is considerable finger pointing, unsubstantiated

comments, and accusations directed at the aftermarket

filter manufacturers, including Fram. "

This is the ONLY time I've ever seen anything claiming that other aftermarket filter manufacturers are having fingers pointed at them, and I think it's very important to recognize the source of the above statement (Fram).

This is nothing more than Fram whining "... but... . but... OTHER peoples' filters are crap too--it's not JUST ours!" when in fact theirs is the ONLY filter that's been complained about.

Fram is just plain pathetic. It will truly be a cold day in hell before I buy another Fram filter.
