Anyway, I will take it off but I wondered if I could take it off without draining any oil. Because I just changed my oil a few hundred miles ago and don't want to waste the fresh oil. Can I just unscrew the thing and put a new one on without losing any massive amounts of oil? I didn't know if any would leak out.

Yes just remove the filter and refill the new filter with about 1 quart of oil and you are good to go lots of guys running extended oil change do this you only loose about 1 quart in the filter and no more mess than any other oil and filter change.

Everybody needs to learn that Fram makes junk sooner than later be glad you know now.

Dean I believe he's asking about FUEL FILTERS. ;)

If you look at your Fleetguard fuel filter it says "Stratapore" on it, at least the factory one that I just replaced did.

Another parts store (electrical & fleet type) has Baldwin filters for $11 and change. Baldwins any good?

AIS Construction Equipment up here is a Fleetguard dealer but had no part number for the 03. Poking around the 24v forums and 3rd gen FAQ, it sounds like they are the same FS19579. I would assume they would have them.

I know this is about fuel filters but here is a TSB on oil filters for the 24 valve engine for those that have not seen it.

Date: May 18, 2001

Models: 1989 -1993 (AD), 1994 - 2001 (BR/BE) Ram Truck

NOTE: THIS BULLETIN INVOLVES 1989 - 201 MY 2500 AND 3500 RAM TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH A 5. 9L CUMMINS DIESEL ENGINE.

Discussion:

Customer may complain of high oil consumption, grey oil smoke coming out of the exhaust or breather tube, or mechanical knocking. Neoprene compounds used internally in the manufacture of oil filters not recommended by DaimlerChrysler may separate from the filter, lodge in the piston cooling nozzle, and can fail the engine.

NOTE: THIS IS NOT AN ENGINE DEFECT.

(See the table below for a list of filters recommended by DaimlerChrysler for use with the 5. 9L Cummins diesel engine. )

NOTE: SECTION 2. 7 OF THE TRUCK WARRANTY MANUAL STATES DAIMLERCHRYSLER MOTORS CORPORATION IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR FAILURES RESULTING FROM IMPROPER REPAIR OR THE USE OF PARTS WHICH ARE NOT GENUINE DAIMLERCHRYSLER MOTORS CORPORATION / MOPAR OR DAIMLERCHRYSLER MOTORS CORPORATION / MOPAR APPROVED PARTS. DAMAGES CAUSED BY THE USE OF OIL FILTER NOT APPROVED BY DAIMLERCHRYSLER MAY NOT BE COVERED BY THE NEW VEHICLE WARRANTY. DAIMLERCHRYSLER RECOMMENDS THE FOLLOWING OIL FILTERS. DO NOT USE ANY OIL FILTER CONTAINING NEOPRENE. PLEASE SHARE THIS WITH YOUR CUSTOMERS.

RECOMMENDED OIL FILTERS FOR USE WITH CUMMINS 5. 9L DIESEL ENGINE:

Part Number Manufacturer

05016547AC Mopar

LF3894 Fleetguard Stratopore

LF3552 Fleetguard Microglass

LF3949 Fleetguard Cellulose

3937695 Cummins Cellulose

FL896 MotorCraft Cellulose

L45335 Purolator Cellulose

PF1070 AC Delco Cellulose

Policy: Information Only

Notes:

The LF3349 Cellulose filter does not appear on this list. It was approved in the past for 12Valve engines, but it has been superseded by the LF3949, which has a stronger metal case for the 24 Valve engines. You can use your existing LF3349's for 12 valve engines without concern about warranty coverage.

What does this TSB mean?

If you use one of the filters in this list, you will not have to worry about warranty coverage of an oil related engine failure. If you choose to use another filter that is not on the list, DC will (justifiably) make you pay for repairs if a piston cooling nozzle becomes clogged by a piece of filter material. Some filters have disintegrated resulting in severe engine damage. When this happens, you must seek compensation from the manufacturer of the filter (numerous reports of Fram failures have surfaced recently, and Wix filters damaged some 1st Gen engines back in the 90's). If the manufacturer is standing behind their product, they will pay for the repairs. GOOD LUCK! Is saving a few bucks on an oil filter really worth the risk of a $4000 repair bill? Your decision...

Not mentioned in the TSB, but a valid reason for denial of warranty coverage is damage caused by foreign material introduced into the oil filter by the person changing the oil. You can not expect a manufacturer to pay for engine damage caused by carelessness during an oil change, that kind of damage is not due to a manufacturing defect! Anything in the center of the filter goes directly into the oil galley when the engine is started. When you open an oil container and pre-fill the oil filter, be very careful that you do introduce into the center of the filter any of these into the filter:

dirt or debris from your hands or the work area

a bit of sealing foil from the top of the oil container

plastic shavings from the oil container

plastic or paper from the oil filter wrapping or container

I think the oil filters are around $16 at my dealership and I think that is full boat. Surprised the employees at your place get such a special deal ;) .

Fram and WIX both state in their warranty that they will and they have paid for damages caused by failure of their filter. K&N states in writing that they will not and have not paid for any damages caused by their filter. Therefore I hold Fram with waaayyyy higher regards than K&N. I don't use Fram filters on my truck except air filters. K&N comes in a fancy high performance box with a cool sticker but they're out of the question for my truck. Geno's 4-2-1 kit is the best bet going.

Anyone have any suggestions on which oil filters are the best for gas engines?

Just not a Fram. FYI, on the gas engines, you can use a Motorcraft FL1 Ford filter. WOrks perfectly and gives you a lot more filter surface and some additonal oil capacity. I used 'em on my 5. 9 (360) 96 and the '03 hemi with no problem at all.

FYI - FleetGaurd makes Three kinds of Oil Filters for our 5. 9L CTD's

For the "Under Valved" 12V Trucks: ;)

Standard #LF 3349

MicroGlass # LF3552

And for the "Properly Valved" 24V Trucks up to the 2002's :D

Standard # LF3959

StrataPore# LF3894

And last but not least new 24V CTD trucks (03 & 04) missing the real "Diesel Clatter" :

Standard # LF3972

StrataPore# LF16035

What is real cool about the '03 & '04 FleetGaurd oil filter #'s listed above is they will fit all of the Cummins 5. 9L CTD's from 1989 (1st gen) thru the 2004. According to "Genos" these filters are fluted making removal easier using their "Six-in-One" Wrench. I am sure the Fluting helps with most any filter wrench that fits the filters.

Also "Genos Garage" (1-800-755-1715) is the best source I have found for all the Filters you need and many other products we CTD'ers use. Not to mention the great service.

For those that Don't know this trick - Here's a way to not spill a drop of oil when changing the oil filter.

Get a large Ziplock (freezer?) style plastic bag. After just breaking the filter loose with a wrench - place the bag over the filter from the bottom. Then using the bag unscrew the filter until it falls into the bag. You then wiggle and snake the Filter & Bag out around the Air conditioner hoses and Inter cooler pipe.

This method also helps when replacing the new filter filled with fresh oil - but I still suggest only filling the filter a little over half way. Then just let the truck idle until your oil gauge reads good pressure and don't forget to check the oil filter for leaks.

I would love to take credit for this trick but I have to admit it is one of many tricks I have learned reading TDR Magazine and the WEB site. :)

illflem,

I don't know if it is of interest to you or not, or maybe FG changed the media since I checked last, but the 3552 actually has microglass media. When I was trying to decide what filter was best to run on my 12 valve I came to the conclusion, through corresponding with FG, that the Stratapore is actually a superior media to the microglass.

Like I said this is just a FWIW point. It probably is moot for all practical purposes as we both know the Cummins with even the cheapest FG filter, cheapest CI-4 oil, and proper oil changes will last a long, long time.

KWIKKURT,

Are the 03/04 filters any larger in size?
