Fram makes a replacement filter for the Dodge cummins. This is what I used on my first oil change. Is this a descent filter to use? Any pros or cons? Anyone know of any scientific evidence to back up filter manufacturers claims.
thanks in advance

I've been watching this forum for over a year, and from what I can see, Fram is not of the quality you want for your Cummins engine. Fleetguard is a Cummins subsidiary, I've used their filters since day one, (truck came with a Fleetguard with a Mopar lable). They come in various grades, standard celluloise, micro-glass, and stratapore. for about $9. 00 ea. I think in the "links" section here someplace, Fleetguard has a site, look at it, & find a dealer close to you. The Case-IH dealer can get you Fleetguard filters too, they use the same engine is some of their tractors... ... DDG

This isn't scientific, but a friend of mine had his 440 GTX rebuilt. (bored out too) This was way back in high school days. Anyway after 500 mi. it seized up. The machine shop that did the work cut the filter in half and found it was defective. Amazingly Fram footed the bill. Since then I won't use their product. Regards, bilford.

I wouldn't use Fram either, the quality isn't there anymore(if there ever was). Here's my reason; A few years ago when I managed a store for a big auto parts chain,I always saw damaged and defective filter cases, even from the factory. The main reason,I myself had to write up two blown engine claims(from cutomers)to Fram for burst filter casings. While they did pay, that's two engines too many for my blood. Since then,I only buy factory filters for any of my vehicles.

This isn't scientific, but I've been using Wix in my equipment for a long time with no problems. I always thought they were better than Fleetguard. You guys have swayed me. I'll be using Fleetguard for the new Cummins. The Fleetguard prices are hard to beat. Regards, bilford.

The guy that had the oil filter study got shut down. He said he didn't have the resources to fight the issue on First amendment grounds. He didn't like Fram at all and he convinced me to stop using them on my wife's car. I think he really hit a nerve somewhere.

heres the link to "a" filter study done
by a average joe blow technical type. http://minimopar. simplenet.com/oilfilterstudy.html
I find that he did a very good job and because of his studies I stopped using FRAM.
I bought a WIX filer. . got it home, opened up the box and wouldnt put it on my Cummins.
I remember what the DC filter looked like and have heard that the rate of oil flow is something like 25g/h. The DC filter had many large holes in both the return and inlet.
The WIX has two tiny holes on the outer ring and one in the inner ring. . the DC had no inner ring. . just a damn well shaft.
Oh and never mind that the three little stinkin holes on the WIX werent even deburred!
Here the WIX sits on my office desk. . cause it aint going on my Cummins.

Thanks a million for that URL, that is excellent reading! Especially for someone like me that always thought all oil filters must be about the same. I wonder where the fleetguard filters fit in to all of this.

Your welcome Fitz... I enjoyed that website myself. I originally read it before his legal problems and after... it really didnt loose any of it value. he just broke the pages up.
where does fleetguard stand. . ?
Well they are owned by cummins...
There are only 3 that cummins will regonize for warrenty.
Fleetguard, Case and DC.
Since the after market filters dont save me money. . I buy from my local DC parts dept.
From the people in the know on the Ram Dirt list... Fleetguard makes the DC filter. .
"makes me much more happier"...
And for my other applications I've gone to puralator.

Your welcome Fitz.
I read that site before he had is legal problems.
I read it afterwards and it didnt loose it's usefullness. he just split the pages up.

Cummins says there are only 3 filters they reconize (from a FAQ from the DIRT list)for warrenty.
Fleetguard, DC and case.
Where does fleetguard fit in all of this?
Cummins owns them.
From the people in know on the Dirt list,
The DC filter is the fleetguard filter, just labled for DC as mopar.
I get mine from the local DC parts counter.

I was at my closest cummins dealer (an hour away) 3 weeks ago to fill up on Premium Blue 2000 and Stratopore 3894 filters. He didn't have the filters so I bought one microglass for that change. He just contacted me out of the blue today that he got the 3894's in and did I need any? Now that's what I call service!!!!!!! You listening DC? Come on and let these guys do our warranty service and you'll sell 5 times the number of trucks!! My local Dodge dealer looks at me like I'm speaking in Chinese once they here the word "diesel"!!
