Fram makes some "good" oil filters, and, according to independent tests, some "not so good" filters.
I'm using the Fleetguard Strapore filters, at least until I get a bypass filter. Geno's has them - buy more than one to save on postage!

the claim in that study about the fram filter have cardboard ends is TRUE , i cut open the one i had to put on when the freightliner dealer i got my stratapore from gave me the wrong one , they were closed and i had already dumped the oil and prefilled the wrong filter , so i had to go to walmart to get a fram till i could get the correct filter , i was not impressed withthe fram and that was all i used , till recently.

Mopar-Musle sounds like dejavue Did the exact same thing last week. Needless to say I was less than impressed with the morons at freightliner, not to mention the wasted oil, the running all over town late on a Sunday. Check your filters, seems that DC tossed another wrench in the works when they "adapted" the ISB to the Rams. Idiots!!! We should have gotten the real deal with a real ECM, power, and now I find oil filter. True ISB have about a 1" thread oil fliter adapter where DC used a 3/4" or so read smaller. I too have also always used fram, but not on my baby. I'll be ordering a case of Fleet Gaurds from Geno's.

Scrmbld4X4,

You might want to check for the Fleet Guard filters at your local big rig dealer. I get them at Redwood Alliance Peterbilt here in Eureka (about five miles from my house) for about the same price as Geno's. They are on the shelf just as I walk in the door.

THAT old "oil filter study" is so old it has whiskers - and equally WORTHLESS!

It isn't an actual "study" at all - merely cutting up of various brands/models of filters, and assumptions as to what was seen.

In actual "testing", you MUST actually USE the filters under test, and measure the various parameters associated with filter operation - does it actually pass the proper volume of hot/cold oil, or immediately go into bypass mode - does it filter down to a specific contaminent size - does the bypas/drainback perform its job - REGARDLESS of materials used...

It's entirely possible for a well designed "cardboard" valve to function BETTER than a poor metal or plasic one in actual use - just as it is for LESS volume of a GOOD filter medium to filter MORE effectively than a LARGER volume of a POOR one!

Attempting to somehow "judge" effectiveness of various filters by visual inspection ALONE is pretty much like trying to select the difference between a Cummins and International using the same methods - LOOKS ALONE can be VERY deceiving!

I met a guy on an RV board one day that said "I will never buy another Cummins as long as I live". I started to ask questions and found that he had used a Fram oil filter, it proceded to come apart from the high oil pressure that a cold ISB had (somethimes over 125psi, thats why they have redesigned our filter several times)

Anyway, these pieces floated around in the oil system, and clogged the orfice that sprays oil on the bottom of the piston crown (for cooling) and bores (for lubrication) and the engine proceded to knock then melt!

Enough Said. I stick with Cummins oil filters and there about the same price if you check Gino's! In fact its time for me to order 2 oil and 1 fuel (enough for 15,000 miles on my truck)

The first time i brought my truck in for it's three month check-up i had a fram oil filter on it, the service mechanic seen it pulled it off so fast it would make your head spin, he said if DC seen the fram filter and you had a warranty problem they would not warranty it you can only use fleetguard or mopar filters, just repeating what he said. The "actual study" I did was to find out that Fleet Guard was the Cummins recommended filter and where I could get it locally. End of study!

I'd stick with the fleetguard filter. It works, and it gives you peace of mind(No warranty hassles). I can pick them up at Cummins or any Implement place locally cheaper than mailorder from any of the vendors.

I use only Fleetgaurd stratpore oil and fuel filters, beside since I am a booster club member I get filters for 20% off at my local Cummins dealer.

I don't understand where these elevated oil pressures come from. My oil gauge only goes to 110 and even on cool days it never gets more than half way to that high mark. Are we talking about way up north, middle of winter cold to get those pressure readings?

I actually have no particular preference for oil filters - tho' the Fleetguard glass jobbie sounds REAL interesting - but I *DO* get irritated in various automotive boards I travel thru where that "filter study" continually pops up, along with the hoots from the Fram haters...

For the record, Wix had some of the same disintegration problems early on with their Cummins filters too - but recalled the bad ones and made changes in manufacturing techniques - and UNLESS Cummins make very SPECICIC demands and specs as to which filters meet their requirements, they damn well better NOT refuse to warrant their engines! Specifying "preferred" or recommended filters is ONE thing - REQUIRING that those ONLY be used is another entirely!

Look around long enough, and you will find various types of failures with virtually ANY brand filter - or OTHER product for that matter - that alone isn't necessarily adequate reason to trash all the REST of them as well...

Hell - even a few Cummins have failed prematurely...

Fleetguard/Cummins fans, don't assume you are getting the "right" filter just because you went to a truck parts counter that had the Cummins sign out front. I found one that was willing to take the time and call the Fleetguard "help" line, we learned that Fleetguard has several different filters for ISB's, depending on which application. At least one other dealer had sold me the "wrong" filter. It fit, it worked, but it was not the best for my application. For the 24v engine you want the Fleetguard LF3894. I said "go to Geno's" because that is what Geno's sells; if you go somewhere else don't let them talk you into a lesser filter for your prize possession! Make them give you an LF3894.

Gary,I'm with you. I use Wix oil&fuel filters in both my Cummins along with seven diesel tractors and six gasser autos. All oil analysises have come back good. Wix is a good filter, but the main reason I use them is that my dealer has a once a year 75%off sale. When the bill comes out to over $600 after the discount you can see why. Says right on the box meets or excides all... If I was ever denined warrenty work due to the filters,I'd go straight to Wix and let them work it out,and I'm sure they would. My . 02

used one Fram before discovering this website (back when was Dieselram.com)-- been using Fleetguard ever since, but do have a PH8A on my remote transmission filter--B&M sends it with some generic "group 7" filter, which, after 6,000miles is replaced by Fram---pressure disintegration shouldn't be a problem, as this one is located post-cooler,and the only downstream destination is the sump pan---maybe gets subjectd to 15-20psi---like was mentioned above, any "good" company can put out a lemon (Firestone tire, for example) batch of products from time to time, but at least there'd be no fingerpoint hassles if a failed Fleetguard thrashed your motor----rm

Wix also makes filters for Car Quest. I have to agree with Gary also,I use Wix oil filters and fuel/water seperaters, never had a problem. I do use a fram air filter and its done as good as any other Ive used.

The reason I asked, is because you can find them anywhere. I usually buy my oil filters and oil from the dodge dealer
Thanx Big A
