My Dodge dealer asked if I do my own oil changes, and if so to use only MOPAR or Cummins filters. The service associate said that Dodge had to foot warranty repair on damaged engines due to some Fram oil filters coming apart internaly. Therefore, Dodge will only honor engine warranty if MOPAR or Cummins oil filters are used. I use Fleetgard filters. Anybody else here of this?

Stref,

There was a thread about a Fram oil filter having its media come apart, probably blocking oil passages like the piston cooling nozzles. Wix oil filters had this problem a few years ago. Using a fleetguard filter is fine. Fleetguard is a subsidiary of Cummins. The Fleetguard Stratpore filter is the best there is for the Cummins.

It fact, the Mopar oil filter from the dealer is a Fleetguard filter painted black and stamped "Mopar". I believe its just the standard filtering media(cellulose), not the Stratapore.

Here is the Fram Oil filter warning thread: https://www.turbodieselregister.com/ubb//Forum3/HTML/002770.html

The way the law is written DC or Cummins can not deny warranty because of the type of filter you use unless they supply the correct filter. I don't see them handing out filters, but some dealers will try to fool you into no warranty if you let them. You're better off to use a better quality filter than Fram anyways, that means almost any other brand. I use Wix myself.

This is true, unless they can "prove" the aftermarket part caused the problem. Now if your filter media comes apart, and plugs oil passages inside your engine, thus distroying it, I don't think it should be Dodge or Cummins responsability to fix it for free.
