2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Frame rust and rot

About 3 months ago I got into a fender bender after hydroplaning in a heavy rain. After taking the front bumper and related parts off and examining the front end, I found frame rot on the lower driver side frame near the radiator support area.

I went to my friends shop and explained what happened, he looked at the frame and said, I can fix this! So, he did!

I think that must be a place that holds water as I have seen a few frames rot in that area. It would probably be a good idea to drill a small hole or two at the low points so that water can drain out of the frame rather than just sit and rot like it did in yours.

I bought the truck brand new in 99 while living in central NJ, stayed till 2004. Then Charleston S.C. till September 2010, then back to Howell, NJ. Not a speck of rust till back in NJ, then...... wammo! Rust sprouting like crazy. Rear bumper, front bumper, both front doors. Must be that salt brine that NJ sprays on the roads instead of spreading rock salt.

That salt brine (we call it beet juice around here) certainly does a number on the vehicles now. That, combined with traditional salt, just eats away at any area that it lays in on these vehicles.

We were just visiting our son in South Windsor, CT & he has a 2000 Dakota & we were backing out of his drive way ,put on brakes & pedal went to floor. He had to have all of his steel brake lines replaced as they were all rusted out. His frame still looked good.
