Anyone in the group running a Frantz oil bypass filter in their '02 or similar Dodge? I'll be installing one in mine soon, but haven't found a potential mounting location I'm real happy with - and also, I'll again be using the same oil supply location from the top of the stock filter housing, and it seems there is already an oil return port available just above the rear of the oil pan on the passenger side?

I used the alternator bracket, bored out two of the existing holes on top to 3/8" and mounted a piece of alum. angle. I'm waiting for my next oil change before I install the Frantz filter. Here's a pic. ... .

Just finished installing a Frantz unit on my '99. I didn't want any more clutter in the engine compartment, so I installed the filter housing on the passenger side outside frame rail, about halfway back. Plumbed everything with Aeroquip steel braided hose and AN hardware. Plumbed the return line into the oil filler cap using my own concoction.

This is a pretty old thread but I have a Frantz bypass filter kit I am getting ready to install. Can you guys post pictures of how you mounted your Frantz bypass filter. I have been debating mounting under the radiator or on the passenger side battery hold down bolt. It would be great to see others folk's solutions. Thanks!

Yeah - REALLY old thread! :-laf

Here's a couple of pics of my install:

I used a section of tubing mounted to the filter mounting bracket, that slips over the battery hold-down bolt.

Gary, this is slightly off topic but want to come back to this one. I was just curious about your frantz fuel filter set up. Did you retain your oem filter assy, or did you just replace it with the Frantz?

My oem filter is leaking out the water sep valve again and I think bio is eating the seals. Was mulling the idea of using a Frantz up there mounted to the battery post as you have done and maybe eliminating the oem, or going with a racor possibly. . Thanks and sorry for veering the thread.

I like the way you mounted your filters to the battery hold-down posts. Easy access, and saves some precious space. .

Yes, the OEM fuel filter is still in use - and is on the output side of the added Frantz, which is mounted over on the driver side battery, similar to the Frantz oil bypass:. .

Here's how the mounting bracket is fabricated for that one - had to be offset a bit to clear other cables. etc. , near the battery:

Wow, that's a great lookin' setup - Even got the coolers!

Ok then, I also like the idea of retaining the oem filter as the last source of defense for the VP44. Fortunately, I had purchased a second valve assy for the oem filter as a spare and it'll be going in this weekend (along with a carefully added dose of permatex #2 this time). Also think ~b25 bio is about as heavy of a mix as I want to go in the near future because bio seems to "eat" just about anything it has time to work on. It actually ate some paint off the bottom of the bed of the truck after it softened up the float level seal on top of the aux tank and dripped out. It's great for lubricity, a quieter and smooth running engine, but you have to be very prepared to use it, or it will try to go everywhere.

That pressure regulator bypass valve is probably a great thing for purging the air out of a new Frantz element as it lets the "shock" effect from air pockets go out the bypass and not hammer the VP as is what I think took mine out after a fuel filter change and let more air than usual into the system. Lesson learned. .

I appreciate the very informative answer & pics and will someday try to fab up a couple battery mounts. They sure provide easier access for maintenance than mine - Which is currently mounted low on the passenger fender just under the big accordion air inlet to the turbo (trying to take us back on subject). (the other one is mounted under the cab in front of the fass for filtering transferred fuel from the aux to the main tank. )

(just don't drop a wrench between the frantz & the hot post on the batts  )

Hey Gary,

Just curious... ... ... what did you use to cut the tabs out of the inside of the oil cap so the sealing flat washer would lay up against the inside top nice n smooth?

HMMmmmm - if you are referring to the oil fill cap used as the Frantz bypass oil return:

I use a Stant replacement cap (#11111, as I recall) and the Amsoil swivel fitting, which requires only that the cap is drilled for installing the fitting - no other mods required.

Gary,
I thought you had a oil bypass filter on your truck already, I'm surprised at your post.
If you like you can pm me your phone number and I'll give you a call on how I did it on my 02.
David

PS, Gary here are some pictures of my trucks engine compartment etc. sorry for how many glamor pictures sorta speak. As you go through the slide show just pause on the picture you want to see for a time.
But you'll be able to see how I installed the filter.

Its easy to miss, but that post was from 2002. He has since added several filters (including frantz) and come up with some pretty good looking oil analysis samples also. Am sure your offer is
appreciated though.

VERY NICE truck! Man... ..... all you need is a signal data converter system and a master caution advisor panel for all of the those gauges. NICE work. Think you will ever sell it? :D
