First I would like to congratulate Fred on the trans. article in the May 2003 issue of Fourwheeler magazine.
Fred had just recently rebuilt my auto a little over 1K miles ago(36000 original miles) and also added the Smart Controller at the same time. The family and I decided it was time for a trip to Payson AZ. to test this thing out before summer and a trip to the Grand Canyon. We hooked up the 5th wheel (approx. 10K) and proceeded on our way. If any of you know the terrain from Phoenix to Payson using the Beeline Hwy. you know there are quite a few 6% or better grades both up and down. A perfect test for a truck pulling a load. This trans. upgrade along with the Smart Controller is phenomenal. There was absolutely no shudder, gear changes were instantaneous and to the point. Another thing not really thought of during installation but coming down those grades out of overdrive and the TC locked up the service brakes were used very sparingly. That part was quite a surprise because I did not expect it. Not quite sure about an exhaust brake now. And yes I am still making payments on the upgrade, but after making this same trip before and after it is well worth it. The only time heat build up became an issue was trying to shoe horn that 32' trailer into a spot at the campground meant for a 10' U-Haul. Backing a trailer into a spot jack-knifed is not my idea of fun. Thanks Fred and DTT for a superb job and now I drive the truck, the truck does not drive me.
