A travesty - there are probably thousands of people like Brandon rotting away in jail today. So going along for the ride with a guy who uses a knife, merits a life sentence with no possibility of parole? What a crock.

The website said it was on appeal - methinks the system is working on it. A new trial would be expensive if granted, but I don't think this kid is quite an innocent bystander here. Let us know what the Appeals Court says.

Another murder that need not take place if drugs were legalized!!!! :D

However, I have trouble feeling sorry, for someone who put themselves in that situation.

He should have slashed is exwife and her boyfriend, noone would convict them, then!

I feel plenty of sympathy for the kids, I remember all too well back when I was a stupid kid riding around with my buddies in a fog of vodka and Everclear. Imagine if one of my buds had done something stupid and killed somebody in a fight with a Buck knife - if they applied the same laws to drinking that they do with drugs then those of us who were in the same car/place with the killer could have been thrown in the clink for LIFE. That's basically what happened to Brandon.

If alcohol was treated the same way that drugs are, there are probably a lot of TDR members who would be sitting behind bars today instead of being productive citizens... .

Are you kidding me? Doing anything with alcohol is WORSE than drugs.

Thats why I joined D. A. M. M. back in my drinking days. Drunks Against Mad Mothers. It was the only chance we had, if we happened to slide into a school bus, or something, on the way back from the bar.

I think just about all of us did some stupid things when we were between the ages of 15 and 18... that's how old these kids were. I got into plenty of trouble at that age and had more than my share of fistfights. The point is if a fight breaks out and one of the kids that you are with acts like a fool and pulls out a small pocket knife and starts using it, I don't think that all 5 of the kids should go to jail for life, without the chance for parole. Especially the 4 kids who didn't even have a knife!

The ONLY reason this injustice happened is the fact that the kid who died was a cops kid. Seems like every day this country becomes more of a "police state. "

I read this link (Owned and published by the kids DAD)... The kid was 18 and an adult by the standards set in our society. The following quote seemed to sum up the accuracy and bias of this web site:

"On August 21, 1996, Brandon Hein was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for being at the wrong place at the wrong time. "

Then, "Brandon was in the fist fight though he didn't know who was swinging or why. "

This sounds like an real bright kid who is doing the world a favor by removing himself from the gene pool. If the kid got a raw deal then I hope he wins on appeal. Your view of California becoming a 'police state' is laughable. Even the fireman have to wear bullet proof vests because the general public feels its ok to take pot shots at them.

The entire judicial system, especially in california has no more respect or bias for the law enforcement than any of the citizens in South Central LA or anywhere else.

Seems to me that is a lot easier to blame the 'system', be it the police or courts or some other entity rather than ask themselves what the hell they were doing as parents.

(I've got my nomex on)

I wish I could laugh about it. If you are a local politician in California such as city council, county supervisor, state assemblyman, even a U. S Congressman... . just try and get elected without the endorsement of the police and fire dept.

I have news for you... it won't happen! This is why politicians, judges, DA's etc. will not go against the police (or fire dept. ). They have gotten way too powerful.

These kids were not a part of a street gang which the "new law" at the time was designed to go after. The DA looked up gang in websters and it said something like when 3 or more people are together... . it was total BS.
