Don't get TOO excited now!
But here's the deal... A while back, a few of us were playing around with a small handful of replaced APPS units we had "liberated" with the help of a DC mechanic friend of one of our members. We disassembled a couple, and pretty much isolated that basic problems were related to poor/failed contact at the internal fingers of the rheostat portion of the assembly, and possibly at the pin connector going into the assembly. The only practical "fix" seems to be drilling the unit at a specific location, and treating it with a good contact cleaner spray. It's unknown as to how effective this fix is, or how long it might last - but in view of the $300+ price of a replacement unit, it should be worth a try for some of the more adventuresome owners in this group.
SOOooo - I have 2 of these units to offer to whoever in the group wants to give them a try - no guarantees, or even the SLIGHTEST assumption of any liabilities on my part - you will be doing this strictly at your own risk! No reason to expect any problems, but we need to understand that up front!
It will work like this. You must have as nearly as possible isolated your particular problem to the APPS - and you must be competent on your own or with whatever local help you can scare up, to swap out the APPS unit. Then try out the replacement I will send you - if it fixes your problem, I want your old one to "treat" for the next user - if it DOESN'T help. I want my unit back!
The idea is to keep a couple of these units in motion to help guys avoid the high cost of replacement, and to determine if the contact cleaner treatment is effective over long enough period of time to be of value.
Yeah, I could try them on my own truck as well - but mine is working just fine, and I'm not gonna screw up something that doesn't need fixing - not when ther are OTHER guinea pigs out there to do it for me!

Any takers? First come, first served...
