Free Spinning Front Spindles

Has anyone installed a set of free spinning front hubs on an 08 2500? is it worth it? and how difficult is the install? thanks

First, welcome to TDR.

Second, I inst. a set on my 06 2500 (see sig. below) and I'm sure your 08 is the same.

Do a search on this sight, there is a lot of info. and discussion on these units. Some love, some hate. I love.

I got a solid 1MPG increase, but what I really like is not spinning all the stuff in front of the transfer case, while driving down the road in 2WD. Also they have new wide spaced, serviceable wheel bearings, as opposed to the failure prone, non-serviceable, expensive, POS stock bearing packs.

Like I said, do a search and you'll probably get "more" info than you need.

I think they are really valuable to guys who have an after market clutch and a manual transmission. I think most high HP clutches are going to be grabby when backing up a trailer, so if ya' pop the truck into 4-low, it works like a charm. But if you are on asphalt or concrete, and you are turning, it is annoying w/the front locked up.

I definitely see a set in my future.

I installed a set on my 05 and on my friend's 04. 5. I saw about 1. 5 mpg better after the instalation. The best thing is that everything does not turn unless you engauage the hubs. Saves the gears, u joints, drive shaft... . and most important the transfer case. In the end with the fuel the way it is I figured they payed for them selvs in about a year ( i drive about 28000 mi a year) but If I never have to rebuild the transfer case then they are gold! I have the Dynatraxx kit on my truck, I installed the Solid axel kit on my friends Both good kits. Solid comes with the U joints saves you a few bucks if you need them. On an 08 you shouldn't need them. If you do install one of the kits clean and paint the steering knuckle where the spindal goes through. I'd even put a bead of silicon around this serfice to protect it from rust. This way later when you need to do the ball joints it all comes apart.

I installed it on my 07 mainly to stop the high speed front drive line vibration I was getting due to my lift. But the added benefit of being able to operate in 2 LO and arround 1mpg improve mileaged is a plus. Granted it probably will take 150K miles to pay for it but with the price of fuel maybe not!

I'm using the EMS Offroad kit.

It was less expensive than the Dynatrack, and IMO the EMS kit would do all the things I needed it to do, and so far it has.

As I recall, it took me about 6-7 hrs. on the L side, and about 3 on the R.

The first one is always the hardest, but the EMS tech. guys were a big help.

I was lucky to not have a problem with rust when I pulled my stock stuff out. Some of the guys have posted that they had a rough time with older trucks, and those that see a lot of road salt.

I used plenty of anti-sieze on the install, just in case.

PS. To be able to use 4-whl. low range on asphalt for backing my camper and my other trailers into tight spots, is a huge bonus.
