I am looking at buying a new hood and i want to get one with fresh air. anyone have any tips on what to look for and where to find one relatively cheap? the local guy wants $995 for a Jackson (can't remember the model)

i like the jackson style hood the best. Any and all thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks

Eric

Eric, Weight is the issue here. In the past I have used a MSA 1/2 mask respirator with remote filter cartridges and a Jackson hood that had a bulge to accomodate the respirator. I have also used a MSA Full Face respirator and MSA PAPR with clip-on welding attachment to accomodate the welding lenses. My point is; Use engineering controls as much as possible to give you clean air-Fans, Smoke eaters etc. Dont weigh yourself down with HEAVY Personal Protective Equipment UNLESS YOU NEED IT. . Heavy PPE where unnecessary will do long term damage to your body. ( Finding the balance is the trick) Check out the Hornell Speedglass ADFLO it may be lighter in weight. Easier on the neck! Twisting your neck with a heavy welding hood to get to tight places is a long term neck injury in the making. ( I know) Dont be swayed by trick paint jobs or decals. You can personallize your own hood! GregH

one guy at work has one of those. . he also has the optrel auto dimming mask as i have too. for most of the work, he uses the optrel and a smoke eater, but when doing heavy plasma work on rusty metal [locomotive battery boxes] he breaks out the 3m one with the filter beltpack. his only complaint about the 3m/hornell one is there is no grinding mode like the optrel and it isn't good for torch cutting [i use my optrel for torch work using the grind mode, it is 1-2 shades too light for heavy torch work, but silver soldering or brazing or a few quick cuts, the grind mode on the optrel is good]

That would be awesome for me, as I use a respirator almost all the time I weld. But the only Jackson with a bulge is not auto-darkening. :(

There is a lot of new stuff out there that I havent heard of. Shop around. Steve St Laurent has a internet accessable welding supplier. I have misplaced the web address. When I looked at it some months back they seemed to have a lot of equipment available. Ryan, That hood was state of the art 20 years ago. They still make it but we didn't have electronic lenses at that time. :D I guess that ages me. :{

Not sure which one he uses, but one of the most popular is Cyberweld. Good prices (that's where I got my Miller Maxstar 150), very fast shipping. I've ordered a few things from them. Weldingsupply.com also is pretty good.
