The air filter has been in that location for all summer and with a load and a 7% grade I went from 1300 down to 1230 and I cant make it go any higher, now the temps are cooler her so I cant see the difference till summer.

I am also monitoring airhorn temps and the move has proven to give me ambient temps plus 20 degrees going into the Cummins, that is the best any air exchanger can do... ... ... ... ... simply the cooler the air in the cooler the air out Cant wait till I get it ram aired OH and cooldown time went in half, while going down the road if you pop it into nuetral the temp goes to 300 quickly ... ... ... that tells me something.

My friend that has the shop where I got it fabed said he could build as many as we want in aluminum or SS... ..... any thickness we want. If there is any interest here let me know.

cheers, Kevin

Kevin,

I'd vaguely considered this approach one day while looking at my BHAF but haven't taken the time to pursue it. Now I see how it would have worked out. Nice job.

I assume the shorter height of the Optima-style battery allowed you to put it where the stock airbox goes without much modification. Was any modification required to relocate the battery? Where do you intend to get your ram air (i. e. where will you locate the intake)?

Thanks,

Jay

I ordered the Optima's because I thought I needed the shorter battery but as it turns out the OEM battery would fit there without hitting the hood, that is the OEM battery holder just relocated and I trimed the BS off the bottom, there was a big support leg on the bottom, I cut all that off and left 1/4" of all the reinforcing ribs for strength. I had to get a 36" extention for the battery cable positive and the negetive was just re-routed, there were several small wires that needed re-routed and a small ground that I had to drill a new hole and re-mount... ... ..... no problem though.

I plan on bringing the ram air tube in from the bottom , the path will be right where the puke bottle was, I also want to design a slide gate on the front of the ram air tube so I can close it off when it is raining or snowing, I plan on being able to do this from the cab.

I also had to get a new boot to go from thr BHAF to the compressor, its off a flowersmoke but dont tell anybody ssshhhhhhhhhhhhh, ;)

Cheers, Kevin

Thanks, Kevin.

After I posted my reply I found your related post in one of the other forums, which addressed my questions.

I've been thinking about switching to an aFe Mega Cannon as I understand they flow more air, and, of course, are reusable. Perhaps the way to go is the aFe cone filter with your set-up. I'll be watching these threads to see how your system works out.

I have never seen a AFE MAGACANNON bit I think they are longer than a BHAF, Right now the BHAF barley slips in behind the plate I built and then you poke the flange thru the hole and that gives you like 1 inch of clearence.

What is the length of the megacannon ?

Cheers, Kevin

Who's make BHAF are you using and what do you need to connect it to the Turbo? Special connectors or parts made up? A part # on the BHAF would help if possible, thanks.

Larry,

Thats a NAPA 2790 and it will connect right up to what you have now, thr filter is closed on the back end and on the front end it has a 4" flange that you hook your hose to and clamp down.

Fleetgaurd makes them and several others as well but I dont know the #### of them

cheers, Kevin

Napa 2790 $39 or $42 forgot which

Kevin,

I haven't seen any dimensions on the aFe's filter. Does anyone here have (access to) one and can measure and post the length and diameter at the large end?

Go Fleetguard

If possible, get the Fleetguard version. Some time ago there were posts comparing flow rates of these filters and the Fleetguard flows the best. I don't know if I can dig those posts up again or not though.

I would still like to know the length of the megacannon. If it would fit in there I would prolly use that one:)

Cheers, Kevin

I PM'd a guy right after my last post to measure the aFe filter itself. He said in another thread he'd just put one on. No response with measurements yet.

Anyone else here with a Megacannon that can measure the filter length and diameter of the large end and post them?

I measured mine, but didn't take it out of the mount. The measurements are approximate:

OAL: 11. 00"

Diameter: 8. 50"

Whitmore, I agree with you on the Fresh Air intake. During testing of the B-1 Turbo prototype... I was testing and recording the Air temps before the filter, After the filter and after the Turbo not to mention the EGT's.

I tried several different air systems. When using a BHAF with no fresh air ducting cruising at 75 MPH the Ambient to under hood / after filter temps were close to each other (20 Deg +/-). Then when pulling up long grades (75mph) as soon as the Radiator/intercooler temp went up - the underhood / Air filter temp went up by 100 deg's!!! Keep in mind that the Turbo takes that temp and heats it up 200% to 400% when compressing the intake charge. All this makes a big difference when it comes to making HorsePower and keeping the Egt temps down.

As there was no ducting available for a BHAF at that time I went back to the ducted systems. Currently I am running a Scotty II system that is ducted to the Cowl (Optional) and the Oem fender location. The AFE Mega Cannon is also a good system and fits nicely under our CTD hood. (I am a Dealer for AFE and Scotty Air Systems). The BHAF should also be a great filtration setup for us BUT the KEY to any of them is COOL RAM AIR... ... 100% ducted ... . Keep up the good work.

I have the Dam air system and the stock airbox. I closed off the oportunity for hot air to enter the horn ares of the box and had to modify the box to take a large duct from the lower valance you see. in the center of it you see the opening for the COOL air induct. the extra 2 fog lights are neat to.
