i am about to change the fluid in my rear differential , i read in the manual that eight ounces of friction modifier is recommended/required when you add the new fluid. can any one tell me where i can buy this stuff ?? thanks in advance for any help.

I just put in Royal Purple the other day and did not have to add modifier. Yes I still have limimted slip, I tried it out on the gravel.

Do a search, for modifiers or rear differentials About 2-months ago there was a big topic about this.

The best stuff is sold at the Dodge dealership (no kidding) I would suggest you go with synthetic fluid and only add a few ounces of modifier and then take it out and run some figure 8's, if you don't have a lot of popping then you don't need to add anymore. If you do need to add more just do it a couple of ounces at a time and then test drive. I know it's a pain in the xxx, but if you just dump in 8 ounces you may eliminate the effectiveness of your LSD.

PS- when you use some synthetic lubes you might not need any friction modifier. These rearends vary a lot. You might want to try the figure 8's before you add any modifier.

Yes to what Pit Bull said. I am running Royal Purple, had to put in 4 oz to stop the chatter. The rear was just rebuilt including the LS clutches so everything was tight.

Amsoil GL5

The GL5 Synthetic Gear Lube is recommended for cases with limited slip. #AGL-1G is the number for 1 Gallon of the 80W90 !! AGL-QT is the # for a single Qt.

You can order it right on their site !!

If you need it the Dodge stuff is the way to go.

I changed out at 30k to Royal Purple and did not need to add any stunk oil.

If you go with a synthetic then read the label - It probably contains the additive already and you may not need any.

When I installed the new differential cover on my LSD 3. 54 rearend I used Amsoil and didn't need any friction modifier.

After the install, I did several figure 8's in our field. I've driven over 4k miles since then and have noticed no binding in the rearend without using friction modifier.

Since we tow heavy, I changed the factory stuff out for Royal Purple 85W-140 synthetic. As has been stated, the Royal Purple already has friction modifier formulated into it. Therefore, I'd put it in, do the figure 8's and then see if any additional Mopar friction modifier is required. Mine didn't need any - the friction modifier in the Royal Purple was enough. If you add it when you don't need it, you're just compromising the functionality of the limited slip differential.

I installed a LSD in mine and filled it with Amsoil. It didn't bind until after a couple thousand miles. 1 ounce of Dodge friction modifier took care of it.
