I have a friend of mine on another offroad site that has a 03 CTD that he needs help fixing it. I think he has gotten some rediculas quotes on fixing it and was hoping some of you Colorado guys can help him out. I would help him but Colorado is a little far away from MN. Heres a link to his post on the other site, and also I will quote it here as well. I told him to head this way, so hopefully he signs up.

Towing a skid steer up a pass, and it started to tick, then it started to knock hard. Oil pressure remained constant, egt's good, coolant temp good. We thought that we lost an injector, but they all look good. Oil filter full of metal shavings. The shop thought that it sounded like it spun a rod bearing. But they need to tear down to check. So all of the tear down and rebuild can end up costing between $8000, and $13,000 depending on how bad it is. A new engine costs $12,500. Any ideas as to what could have happened? The truck has an edge juice and hasn't been pushed past 1200deg preturbo. Boost is always below 35psi. Oil changes have been done approx every 5000 miles w/ mopar filters and Delo 15-40. Does anyone have any good options, or opinions for our dilemma?

His next Post:

So if the injector took out the piston and valves, should a rebuild cost me around $8000 because we would be replacing valves, all pistons, sleeving the cylinders possibly, new set of injectors, etc? or would it be even more to have our local Cummins dealer do it? I think the office got multiple quotes between 8k and 13k to rebuild our engine. Or would we be better off w/ a new Cummins crate for 13k w/ warranty? ... ... ... ... ... ... Or should I jump on a wrecked 3rd gen w/ unknown mileage that I found in Wyoming? This sucks. So this is common for the edge boxes? Glad I have been too broke to put one in my '05.

Last Post as of now:

With the massive amount of metal shaving that have went through the oil, in all parts of the engine, do you think a lot might need replaced anyhow? I heard just to get the shavings out of the gallies, and whatever else they may have gone through, that the whole thing probably needs worked over anyhow. Unfortunately, there is a cold chance in heck that I would ever have the time to work on the engine myself due to work circumstances.

Which is why I haven't been here anymore. I am literally nailed to the wall, and w/ a new house, wife, dogs, and running a very busy concrete business, as well as new hobbies and toys such as snowmobiles in winter, and fourwheelers in summer, my time and budget has suffered for lifts, and mods, and internet. But I do occasionally read through what goes on here. It is crazy to see people that were around back in '03, still frequenting the site. I kind of miss knowing as much, and learning as much as I did when I was here 24/7. Made some good internet friends too. Interesting, and nice people. Anyhow, thanks for remembering me Matt, and I hope all is well w/ you guys. Thanks for the help as always.

Thanks guys, hope you can help him out, hes a pretty cool guy!

Wow sounds like something went south. Unfortunatly pulling the engine out and tearing it down is the only way to really figure out what happened. If it was me, I'd see if you can find a Used engine to drop in it. Take the old engine and find out what happened and rebuild it. It sounds like he pulls heavy quite a bit owning a concrete business. Having another engine around as back up probably wouldn't hurt his feelings much.
