I just got through replacing the front axle u-joints. Now I noticed the right front axle seal leaking. What is envolved in replacing this seal, how do I do it and is there a tread on this? The truck has a 4850lb. front axle

Just for info. I bought the greasable U-Joints from NAPA for $45ea. I did call Dodge, just curious, and asked their price $121ea. nongreasable.

Did you raise the side of the axle that you were working on several inches higher than the other? If not, a small amount of lube will leak into the axle tube and leak out the end for a few hundred miles. If it leaks longer than that, then the seal was damaged.

These seals are not real easy to replace. The passenger side can be replaced through the vacuum motor access panel. The driver's side has to have the differential out to replace.

These seals are real easy to nick when reinstalling the axles.

I'm changing mine soon

Give Dan at Quad 4X4 a call he's a TDR guy.

I got all my seals and the special tools to put them in from Dan.

Free shipping and I did not have to deal with the Dealer. :)

He also gave me a bunch of tips for the install.

Note.

My seals have lasted 200k miles.

If yours has less miles you probably just leaked a little oil past the seal.

I have heard that you should wait about 500 miles to see if it stops.

Thanks guys for the info. As I did both sides I just placed the truck on jack stands, the truck was level. The truck only has 85,000 miles on it, so I hope this is just what your saying. I have only 15 miles on it since I replaced the u-joints. I will drive it for a few hundred miles and keep an eye on it.
