Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) front axle

my buddy has a '01 2500 4x4 6spd with basically no other mods. he was out fourwheeling with it when it started making a verry bad grinding sound. i got out and grabbed the front drive line and it moved left and right about 3 inches either way. the whole front axle is shot, because where the driveline goes into the axle (pinion?) the axle housing is crackes and ground down. we are going to get an axle out of a 1998 v10. how hard will it be to change? any help will be appriciated.

It really shouldn't be too bad. It sounds like you guys have some mechanical "know how". I think you'll just have to disconnect the brake lines, vacuum lines, maybe ABS connector, steering components, track arm, 4 control arms, driveline, and coil spring and it should roll out... . I've never done one but I would assume thats the gist of it. Just be sure to get it aligned after your done.
